It’s been 14 years since we last saw The Incredibles family. Last we saw them, left standing at the together after Dash’s track meet when a monstrous digger pops up out of the ground; and we were all left with a cliffhanger about what they did about the Underminer that lasted more than a decade.
All The Time That Has Passed…
Let’s face the reality that sequels suck. Most specifically kid’s movie sequels. So, even while Pixar has set a name for its self for having excellent sequels (thus far, knock on wood), I still found myself anxious before the opening credits rolled.
Sitting in a dark, theater packed with children and armed with the snacks. I spent the next two hours laughing, empathizing, and thoroughly enjoying the movie. I did notice a lot of really deep topics that can come out of a movie like this. I’d like to elaborate on that, consider this the SPOILER ALERT warning…
The Perfect Continuation…
The movie picks up just where the Incredibles were left, facing off against the digger tank that came out of the ground, that is being controlled by a villain they fail to catch. Bob, Helen, and their kids are faced with the reality of, as much as they felt like they were helping, they seemed to interfere with city insurance plans. The family struggles to deal with deciding if they will continue in their “illegal” activities as Supers or if they will attempt to hide who they are and live normal lives.
Soon after Frozone, approaches them about a company that waits to help make Supers legal members of the community, allowing them to be who they are. However, things are never as they seem, as Helen begins to discover being the Super Activist, they hire to prove that society needs Supers. A large plot point for me in this movie was, not everyone with money and power who wants to be on your team. Sometimes they aren’t batting for you, they are gunning for you.
Incredible Changes For The Incredibles Family
While Helen is busy being Elsatigirl, Bob is at home learning what life is like for a typical stay at home parent. You see Bob struggle with Jack-jack, who has more than just a few superpowers. Bob also, wrestles with sleep deprivation. After being asked by Frozone “When was the last time you slept?” Bob responds, “Who keeps track of that?” I giggled at that myself, as I recall the sleepless fog of early motherhood.
Besides Jack-jack epically taking on the raccoon, who for the record was a very worthy advisory for a baby with countless superpowers. My other favorite scene was watching him meet and charm Edna Mode. “He’s brilliant, and I’m stimulated. We are made for each other.” the whole scene reminded me of watching that friend we all have, who doesn’t like kids; but they end up connecting and liking one of your kids.
Overview of The Movie
Full of positive messages on having morals, stepping out of your comfort zone for other people. As well as taking on challenges, and never letting what makes you different stop you. Incredibles 2 also pointed out many real issues with society. Our love for convenience that technology brings being the biggest, as well as problems with corruption in activist groups. There were a lot of relationship issues among that family there were also important to the story. From Bob making a major mistake with Violet. To the jealousy we watch him struggle with as he watches Helen be the superhero.
Even with for me, a fairly predictable storyline, and ending. I still really enjoyed and was pleased with the end result of The Incredibles 2. It will be a movie that we purchase and watch a few more times, at the very least I’m sure.
