Uppermost stopped in Seattle to perform a show at Kremwerk nightclub during his most recent tour. Only a few days after his Seattle performance, Uppermost dropped his eighth album, “Perseverance,” yet another excellent development of his longstanding musical evolution.
While Uppermost was here, I also had the opportunity to interview him and gain some personal insight into his life and the special brand of music that he creates.
Find out in our interview how Uppermost’s inspirations and challenges have pushed him through his long ascent in the music world, to becoming one of France’s greatest music producers.

RMR Interviews Uppermost
RMR: So, your newest LP “Perseverance” was just released. What was the theme and inspiration behind this album?
Uppermost: In Perseverance, I wanted to reveal a huge part of the creative process that is often hidden from the public by artists. That slow, steady work that happens on a daily basis for years and eventually turns into the successful end result that reaches the fans.
RMR: What’s it like in the music scene in France compared to the West Coast?
Uppermost: There’s a real difference in approach here. in my opinion, in France and especially Paris, people tend to make and listen to music for its cultural signature more than for just the sound itself. It’s a cultural difference that you might have to see to completely understand.
RMR: I know that you used to be a law student before becoming a full-time musician. What made you switch gears? Was there a specific moment that it occurred to you that you wanted to chase your dreams as an artist?
Uppermost: Since I started my studies and even before that, music was clearly my biggest passion. I think I just needed those few years of distance being at school to help me realize it and become confident enough to put all my effort towards music.
RMR: what do you think your life would be like now if you’d continued law school?
Uppermost: That’s a good question. I’m sure whatever path I’d have chosen I would have kept doing things with all of my heart, but who knows where I’d have ended up if I’d taken that road. It certainly would have been different, and I suppose I chose this path for a reason. I’m happy and grateful for being able to express my love for music every single day. Music is the most beautiful gift I could have asked for, and I’m glad I followed this path.
RMR: Do you think that the food in Seattle is comparable to that of France?
Uppermost: I’m not going to lie, the food here is very different! I think both have their bright and dark side, but I have to say that I’ve missed the French cheese a lot throughout my US tour.
RMR: Do you think that the music scene is heading in a good direction? Or do you think that it’s lacking?
Uppermost: I’m not really sure about the direction the music scene is heading towards as a whole. What I would love to see more of is recognition for talented artists that don’t fit into any specific genre or market. Music is an art, a way to express the essence of the things we see and feel. So, we should really care about those talented people who don’t necessarily follow the trends. They are often some of the most inspiring and creative artists.
RMR: Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations?
Uppermost: I’d have to say that Burial has been a great inspiration of mine since his early days because I find wisdom in his music; a message of humility that deeply inspires me. Daft Punk and their growth as independent artists have also influenced me in my musical journey.
RMR: What’s the hardest thing about being an artist on tour like yourself?
Uppermost: Definitely the fact that I can’t make music because of the fast-paced rhythm of traveling. Also, the lack of sleep and the general rush that you are in makes things challenging at times. It takes getting used to.
RMR: what has been your favorite city to perform in, so far?
Uppermost: Portland was really an amazing discovery. I love the artistic spirit of that city! I would love to go back and play there again in the future!
RMR: What are your plans after this tour is over? What style of music do you feel like taking on next?
Uppermost: I’ve been working on a live show for the new album with my bassist and guitarist friends. That will be my focus in the coming months. As for new music, I keep creating without thinking of specific genres, so my next project is still not fully realized. As an artist, I like to always keep myself surprised and stay in the moment.
