In today’s hip-hop, the trends that come & go at 100mph are amongst the heaviest of influencers in deciding the direction of the culture. In an era where artists jump more waves than Otto Rocket, artists like Future have stayed true to their craft and remained a staple in their respective lane.
In a cover story with HighSnobiety, Future explains why it’s beneficial to carve out your own sound instead of trying to sound like other rappers. He sheds light on a few topics including his own non-profit, his dedication to the craft and how he’s been able to sustain one of the more prolific runs in hip-hop.
When asked if his work ethic is the secret behind his fast pace music making, he reveals that he constantly creates because he feels that the musical landscape is subject to change at any moment.
“I’m always making music. I feel like that’s the key,” he says. “I just try to stay in tune with what’s going on: I keep my eyes open for new artists, listen to new melodies on the radio, pay attention to tempos playing in the clubs. At the end of the day you just have to find the tempo. Find something good about it, but still stay true to yourself.” He also stressed originality as a key for a long career in the music industry.
“Being yourself [musically] is the most important thing,” Future says. “Some people try to be everybody, so that’s why they burn out. There’s longevity in being yourself and not trying to be 10 other people.”
Near the tail end of the interview, Future explains that he is in a special place right now where he is experiencing certain things for the first time.
“Right now I want to make music I never thought I could make. I’m trying to perform in ways I never thought I could perform. I’m trying to go places I never thought I would go.”
He goes on to say that he still has much he would like to accomplish within music and that he can’t see himself focusing on much else until he does that. It’s an insightful look into the mind of Future Hendrix.
