2016 was quite a year. We already covered the top hip-hop releases and now it’s time for the hottest RNB albums most people overlooked. I’ve put together a list of 5 projects you missed but need to hear.
5 RNB Albums You Missed in 2016
6lack – Free 6lack
JayPing just put me onto 6lack the other day. I’ve seen his name circulating the Twitter’sphere from respected industry insiders and its easy to tell why upon first listen.
With production that would satisfy ASAP Rocky and sound that is akin to The Weekend, the Zone 6 Atlanta artist has a unique feel that will no doubt be spreading to the masses soon.
DVSN – Sept. 5th
DVSN put out one of my favorite albums in 2016 period!
I just looked over my Spotify stats for the year and ‘Too Deep’ was my most played song overall. The OVO production/artist duo has had a hand in production on some of Drake‘s recent work but they really shine on their own.
Anderson Paak – Malibu
Anderson Paak came onto the scene with his XXL Freshmen nomination and features all over Dr. Dre’s Compton soundtrack.
His 2nd studio project Malibu made a big splash this year but also flew under the radars for quite a few heads. The unique vocal style of Paak has been received well by music fans of all genres.
Ro James – Eldorado
My guys Nic and Cam put me onto Ro James. After I added him to my Spotify playlist, I was hooked. This record was refreshingly unique especially in a year where everybody wants to be the next Drake and Bryson Tiller.
Ro’s sound reminds me of a mix of RNB and Kings of Leon. The records that stood out to me were Last Cigarette, Holy Water, and A.D.D.I.D.A.S.
TYuS – Never Forget
TYuS is a Portland RNB artist and producer that was introduced to us with collaborations alongside Cassow. He has received praise from OVO’s camp and even signed a deal with Warner Music this year.
I’ve been a fan of TYuS sound on records and behind the boards. He’s a nice sample based producer that will satisfy those who like PartyNextDoor and Bryson Tiller.
