Macklemore Confesses Relapse in 2014

Addiction is something that can happen to anybody. You don’t have to have an addictive personality to get physically and mentally trapped by a substance. And contrary to what a lot of people think, money and attention don’t make addiction any easier to battle.

Our very own local-turned Grammy winner Macklemore (@macklemore) has recently confessed that he relapsed in 2014, with fame and pressure to blame. It was his wife’s pregnancy announcement that finally ended all the bargaining, sneaking, and lying last September.

As a person fresh off my 2nd year of sobriety, what makes me happiest about this story is the fact Macklemore spoke at King County’s Juvenile Drug Court 20th anniversary in October 2014. One month after he got his shit back together, he brought that life changing feeling of seeing the light to young recovering addicts.

People might think someone with more time, or someone who isn’t relapsing should have been there. But I can say from experience the people who remember the pain of addiction because they were just in it say the best shit.

Macklemore’s relapse is a reminder to anyone recovering out there that the danger is always there. Work your program. Get a sponsor. Pick up that 1,000 pound phone and call someone who will listen. That’s what worked for me at least. But enough about me:
