The future of Gundam continues to expand in exciting new ways. During San Diego Comic Con 2026, Bandai Namco Filmworks officially unveiled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a brand new anime series arriving in 2027 that will launch alongside an entirely original timeline known as After Apocalypse. The project introduces an all new universe that will also serve as the foundation for the upcoming action game Gundam Rogue Orbit.
The announcement was one of the biggest reveals to come from the Gundam Showcase at SDCC, giving fans their first substantial look at what Bandai Namco is calling the RG Project. Unlike previous Gundam series that largely exist as standalone entries, RG XARX-ZERO and Gundam Rogue Orbit will tell interconnected stories across different generations, creating one shared universe from multiple perspectives.

A Brand New Gundam Timeline Begins
Since the anime’s debut in 1979, Gundam has built one of anime’s richest universes by exploring multiple timelines. While the Universal Century remains the franchise’s most iconic continuity, alternate settings like Iron-Blooded Orphans‘ Post Disaster timeline and The Witch From Mercury’s Ad Stella universe have allowed creators to tell fresh stories without relying on decades of established lore.
The After Apocalypse timeline follows that tradition while introducing one of the franchise’s most original premises yet.
Rather than centering on political conflict between familiar factions, humanity faces an entirely different threat after contact with an autonomous interstellar object from another galaxy.
The mysterious object grants humanity three revolutionary technologies:
- Gravity Control
- Faster Than Light Communication
- Cognitive Materialization
These discoveries spark an unprecedented era of advancement, allowing humanity to spread throughout the solar system. However, the breakthrough quickly becomes a nightmare when the object suddenly transforms into an uncontrollable, self propagating ecosystem known only as The Apocalypse.
After a devastating three month war fought above Earth, humanity is forced to abandon its home planet entirely, marking the beginning of a new calendar known as After Apocalypse Year One.
By the time RG XARX-ZERO begins in A.A. 45, an entire generation has grown up without ever seeing Earth.
Ray Azumi Leads Gundam’s New Generation
The anime follows Ray Azumi, a young war orphan whose parents were killed during humanity’s catastrophic conflict with the Apocalypse.
Raised in a world forever changed by that event, Ray awakens on the Moon and eventually becomes the pilot of Gundam Zero, placing him at the center of humanity’s next chapter.
Ray will be voiced by Takeo Otsuka, who has quickly become one of anime’s rising voice acting talents through performances in recent hit series.
While Bandai Namco has yet to reveal many additional characters, the setting alone already separates RG XARX-ZERO from previous Gundam entries. Instead of focusing solely on military conflict between human factions, the series appears ready to blend classic mecha action with large scale science fiction concepts involving survival, exploration, and humanity’s future.
Kenji Kamiyama Builds A Gundam Universe From Scratch
Leading the creative vision is acclaimed director and writer Kenji Kamiyama, whose résumé includes Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and The Ninth Jedi from Star Wars: Visions.
For Kamiyama, creating an entirely original Gundam universe presented both an enormous challenge and an exciting opportunity.
Rather than working within established lore, he was tasked with answering fundamental questions that have defined Gundam for decades.
What replaces the Earth Federation?
What becomes of Zeon?
How do Newtypes exist in this world?
What replaces Minovsky particles?
According to Kamiyama, stepping away from those expectations ultimately allowed him to rediscover what made Gundam exciting in the first place.
“I had been given the chance to create my own Gundam from the ground up for a series I’ve loved for years. What could be more exciting than that? Once I found my way back to that excitement, a fresh and unexpected Gundam began to take shape.”
Supporting Kamiyama’s vision is award winning novelist Toh EnJoe, who contributed to the worldbuilding of the RG universe, while Sola Animation will handle production duties.
Connected To Gundam Rogue Orbit
One of the most interesting aspects of the RG Project is how closely the anime and game will connect.
Rather than adapting one another, RG XARX-ZERO and Gundam Rogue Orbit tell different stories within the same continuity.
Bandai Namco describes them as sharing “a narrative spanning generations within one continuous world,” with each project exploring the universe from a different perspective.
Chronologically, the anime takes place roughly 100 years before the events of Gundam Rogue Orbit, laying the foundation for the world players will eventually experience in the game.
Originally revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026, Gundam Rogue Orbit immediately caught attention thanks to its fast paced combat, which many fans compared to FromSoftware’s Armored Core series. The project also features music from legendary composer Mick Gordon, best known for his work on DOOM (2016), whose heavy guitar driven soundtrack already appears to fit perfectly with the game’s high intensity mech battles.
Together, the anime and game represent one of Bandai Namco’s most ambitious cross media Gundam initiatives in years.

A Bold Direction For Gundam’s Future
The Gundam franchise has never been afraid to reinvent itself, but the RG Project feels especially ambitious.
Creating an entirely new timeline while simultaneously developing an interconnected anime and video game gives Bandai Namco the freedom to build a universe without decades of existing continuity shaping every creative decision. New fans can jump into RG XARX-ZERO without prior Gundam knowledge, while longtime followers will have the opportunity to explore a completely original interpretation of many of the themes that have defined the franchise for nearly 50 years.
With Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and Gundam Rogue Orbit both targeting 2027 releases, the After Apocalypse timeline is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting additions to Gundam in recent memory. If the worldbuilding, creative team, and early concept are any indication, the RG Project could become the franchise’s next major universe for a whole new generation of fans.
