MJ Unpacked recently had its first-ever Midwest conference in Detroit at the Motorcity Hotel & Casino after hosting shows the last few years on both coasts. Unpacked’s first entry into the Michigan market was a clear success by the start of the opening mixer. Industry professionals gather from the local Midwest region and across the country in one of the extraordinary community-building events within the space.
Our friend Willie McKenzie of locally based Left Coast Holdings had told us “I really feel a part of a community at MJ Unpacked. After attending their Vegas and New York shows, I’m continuing to meet new people each show but have made an amazing friend group amongst like-minded individuals from across the industry.” Honestly, we couldn’t agree more! The Jage Media family has done just that, built a family (an extended one at that). If you’ve ever attended or held a booth at an Unpacked event, you know the staff is 100% invested in every individual’s experience. We constantly see them ask for feedback, how they can help (with and beyond the show), and personally connect dots. The leadership of George and Kim Jage aren’t watching from a bird’s eye view, they are on the floor with smiles and making sure any and everyone can access their time and energy.
RMR has been to every single MJ Unpacked since the first rendition in Las Vegas during 2021 and we aim to be at every event they continue to produce in the future. The format is simple, create a welcoming atmosphere that promotes conversation, learning, and expansion while curating a highly targeted audience that makes that atmosphere “easy”. The simplicity provides a focused north star that guides attendees toward value. The brand exhibition hall features booths and brand exhibition glass cases to make walking the floor straightforward, enticing, and easy to communicate. Around that, they curate programming featuring a diverse group of talent, experience, and professional titles to give insight into the market and what it takes to succeed in the tumultuous industry that is legal cannabis.
The Detroit show took place over three days with day one consisting of panels and programming, the investor summit, and the opening mixer. Days two and three consisted of the brand exhibition hall being open alongside panels and various after-parties and networking events. Outside of the main show, we attended events produced by Flowerhire, Treez, Orange Photonics, Qwik Liquids, WYLD, Surfside, Farechild, and Sensi Mag. All of these companies provided great opportunities to keep the networking moving beyond the show floor.
Over the week we conducted interviews with industry professionals which provided insight into the show, their respective regions, and thoughts on the greater industry. We look forward to the next MJ Unpacked event which will likely take place back in New York next Spring.
