Kenny Runaways reps the East and West side of Buffalo, and takes a different avenue with his rap style. Most of the music that comes from Buffalo has more of a 90s feel, which is why he may be overlooked. The hip-hop style is held to a generic standard, and Kenny has been bending that bar with his style. He has a relaxed, laid-back flow, which you can hear on his single “Infinity.” In his music, he captures certain feelings and emotions that resonate well with the audience. He hasn’t released any music since 2020, but there is new music on the way!

Armani is the first woman rapper picked up by Griselda Records, and is taking a turn with their label by extending to the modernized, auto-tuned sound. Growing up on the East side of Buffalo, Armani got her start with her debut album The Liz, which she recorded at a studio called Buff City. Although born and raised in Buffalo, Armani claims she is an adopted North Carolina native since her aunt moved to Charlotte in 2000. She has been influenced by New York native Lil Kim, and takes on that role of the tough, rap girl trying to navigate the male-oriented industry. Brought into the industry by the late DJ Shay, she’s placed her music career in Charlotte, while continuing to integrate that Buffalo grit.

Growing up on the gritty, harsh streets of Buffalo, YNX 716 is one of the leading lyricists from his hometown. Taking inspiration from Nas, Scarface (from the Geto Boys), Lloyd Banks and other rappers alike, YNX’s delivery takes you back to the early 1990s, which many will argue is the essence of hip-hop. Not only this, but it is refreshing to hear in the modernized sound of hip-hop today. Like many rappers, it started as a hobby and a way to vent his struggles and experiences. Now, he is working on his new album release, Hennessy Memories.

Mad Dukez

Mad Dukez takes a lot of his influence from the early hip-hop days. Rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Kool Herc, Super Cat, and other rappers alike fine-tuned his music to bring sounds from that era alive again. He and his producer Fresh Kils are deemed one of the best underground duos in Buffalo today, almost like today’s era of Murs and 9th Wonder.

They have a few singles out on YouTube, their song “GTL” being the most popular. Their latest single is called “Stuntin” which was released in August of 2021.
