8 New York City Events You Should Check Out | September 2023

New York City is known for the glamour and allure that attracts the masses. With space in diversity and culture, there are events for everyone. The city’s unique event history sets it apart from others, and it has never been shy of attracting people interested in joining the hype. 

These events spawn all five boroughs with various areas of diversity and levels of entertainment for the city to enjoy. This September is for all music, fashion, and food lovers. This RMR list has events from areas in Brooklyn, Harlem, and local parks in each borough. 

So, if you want to get involved in all the fun activities New York City offers, here are eight different events that are hitting the city during the month of September.

Labor Day

1. West Indian Day parade 

Dating back to 1940, the West Indian Day parade is one of the most talked about events during New York City’s Labor Day weekend.  

On September 4th, throughout Crown Heights, Brooklyn, the 2-mile dancing celebration attracts millions of visitors annually with Caribbean carnival masks, costumes, paint, and sweat. Paradegoers dance behind floats in the streets and sidewalk to steel pan drums. 

Here, you will listen to various sounds of the West Indies, with Soca and Dancehall music. Representing all islands in the West Indies, people dance and celebrate the fruits of their labor.

2. Brooklyn Night Market

As Brooklyn becomes one of the city’s most populated boroughs with various cultures combined, It is no surprise that the generated buzz around Brooklyn Night Market continues to grow. 

It takes place on the last Monday of each month, starting in May and ending in October, with many options, including live music. More than 40 vendors show off their independent cuisines from all over the globe. Located in the heart of Sunset Park, you are greeted with Asian, Afro-Latin/Caribbean, and American cuisine, to name a few. 

The market also includes art, cultural artifacts, and handmade pieces from local natives. You can visit the remaining Mondays on Sept 25th and October 30th from 4 pm to 10 pm EST.  

3. Feast of San Gennaro 

Returning to the streets of Little Italy, the 97th San Gennaro feasts is a NYC staple. The packed food crawl includes delicious authentic pasta, pizza, and gelato from September 14th to the 24th. 

In Manhattan’s Little Italy neighborhood, you can participate in Italian New York culture through food and music, with carnival-style games and even a Ferries wheel that lights up lower Manhattan. Don’t miss out on this friendly and light-hearted affair. 

History, Fashion, and Culture

4.  100 Years of Art and Pop Culture at the Museum of the City of New York

Art exhibits are staples of New York City events. This brand new exhibit dives into theater, fashion, music, film, and art that is New York City throughout 100 years—displaying hundreds of objects reflecting the streets and subways. As well as hidden gems from bars, rooftops, nightclubs, and local city life. 

Located in East Harlem, this exhibit runs from now until June 21, 2024, with $20 admissions for Adults and discounted student rates. 

50 Years of Hip-Hop

5. The Book of Hov at Brooklyn Public Library

With the celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop throughout the city, right off the 2 and 3 Grand Army Plaza train station. The Brooklyn Public Library has decided to celebrate Jay-Z with a free art installation throughout two library floors. 

The installation includes exclusive art and pieces from his archives throughout his music career. Looking back on his life, he helped redefine the hip-hop industry and its role in the community of Brooklyn with texts and audio to help immerse viewers.

6. Hip Hop Til Infinity at Hall des Lumiéres

Another immersive exhibit in NYC celebrates 50 years of hip hop and its history in Lower Manhattan, LES.  You can now be transported from the beginning of hip-hop to its mainstream present future. 

From now until September 17th, you can visit this of the various anniversary events, with tickets starting at $40. 

7. The House of Cannabis: THC NYC 

THC and Live Music

It is known as the “Home to High Culture” in Soho. The House of Cannabis is the first immersive experience openly exploring cannabis in the city. 

With three floors and ten sensory experiences of music, visual arts, fashion, and information on the 6000 years of cannabis. Learn about the agriculture and genetic makeup of cannabis with the first-ever live grow display. 

You can also experience live music and tools to help your rolling skills. Also, explore their extensive shop for all munchie needs. Starting at $40 for adults and $30 for students, you can transcend at THC NYC.

8. Summer Stage

Lastly, you can check out the Summer Stage concert series, accessible to the public until September 30th. You can see 80 shows between Central Park and other parks throughout the city, celebrating 50 years of hip hop. Performances from Lil Yachty, Kool and the Gang can be expected. Even appearances from Diplo for dance lovers as well. This will be one of the hottest New York City summer events!

There are also fundraising concerts with artists like Grand Master Flash and DJ Rekha. Do not hesitate on this, as tickets can sell out quickly!
