MJBizCon 2023, the premier cannabis conference, wrapped up another chapter in the heart of Las Vegas, leaving attendees with an amalgamation of experiences, insights, and a continued sense of industry camaraderie in the business sector. As a seasoned attendee marking my 6th year at this monumental event, my knees and back might not have built up enough stamina, yet the energy surrounding from this year’s gathering is always present.
This year’s conference served as a convergence point for an abundance of familiar faces, clients, and industry friends from across the nation. Amidst the vibrant display of booth setups and conversations, it provided a valuable opportunity to glean insights into the cannabis industry’s trajectory for the year that’s winding down and the aspirations driving us into the forthcoming one.
One of the most invigorating aspects of MJBizCon is witnessing the triumphs and successes of friends and colleagues within the industry. The stories shared amid the bustling event underscored the fact that despite the challenges, there are winners in the cannabis space. While acknowledging the industry’s arduous nature, I refrain from limiting it with generalizations. Just as in any other sector or life itself, success is attainable with dedication, strategic approaches, and an unwavering focus on goals.
Among the highlights, witnessing the growth of the 40 Tons Brand and the accomplishments of individuals like the 40 Tons left an indelible mark. Their journey exemplified how dedication and appreciation within the industry can pave the way for deserved growth and recognition. Their activation was powered by DaySavers and featured a campaign centered around writing letters to cannabis prisoners. They built a cell block inside the convention center complete with a toilet, sink, cot and all while wearing prison jumpsuits and showcasing members of the cannabis community that are still currently behind bars.
Despite a slightly reduced turnout, the conference’s essence remained vibrant. For single-state operators or those focusing on specific markets, the decision to dedicate time to local growth versus attending was a strategic one, and we saw a lot of folks stay home with their nose to the grind.
Moreover, the evolution of Farechild, from their humble medical origins in Seattle to their current stature with the first inaugural Emjays, was nothing short of inspiring. Their journey typifies the growth and maturation of the industry, bringing the plant to large scale mainstream theatres, literally. Our team was honored to be nominated this evening and thoroughly enjoyed the mix of a classic night in Vegas with cannabis celeration.
Additionally, the various events like Blunt Brunch, Grasslands mixer, ACTIVATED by Polkadot, and Litty In The City on Friday showcased the diverse cultural fabric and entrepreneurial spirit the exists amongst the cannabis community. Events like Litty brought out traditional market vibes while ACTIVATED showcased pyschadelics alongside cannabis, both bringing more aspects than just the recreational industry to focus. Blunt Brunch’s growth over the years has been one of my personal favorites to watch and I look forward to continually making that statement!
In retrospect, MJBizCon 2023 was a beautiful moment that brought together people I met almost a decade prior pre-legalization together with folks I just met this year. While chang is inevitable and many are facing uncertain times, we’re proud to continue to stand tall with the plant as a means to provide opportunity.
The conference echoed the sentiment that while challenges persist and diversity is still a topic needed to be addressed, unity, innovation, and unwavering dedication continue to fuel the industry’s upward trajectory. As we bid adieu to another successful MJBizCon, the echoes of shared experiences, new connections, and inspiring stories resonate, igniting the passion to continue shaping the cannabis landscape positively.
