While certain parts of Los Angeles are known for hosting some of the biggest celebrities and musicians, Inglewood is full of underground hip-hop talent that you may not find without some digging. The search is well worth it, but I will save you some time with my list of “11 Inglewood Artists You Should be Supporting in 2021.”
You can truly hear the West Coast old school hip-hop influence in each one of these artists. If you’re a fan of artists like Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, or others like them, you’re guaranteed to add these Inglewood artists to your playlist.
11 Inglewood Artists You Should Be Supporting in 2021
Mark W.
First up on this list, I had to feature my personal favorite Inglewood rapper, the meticulously multitalented Mark W. He doesn’t get that name from just anywhere. Mark does it all, rapping, producing, mixing & mastering, promotional graphics, hosting, and even running his own studio.
On top of all of that he still finds time to connect with his over 5k fans on Instagram. Mark W. throws us genuinely feel good hip-hop with groovy beats and catchy yet meaningful lyrics. If you mix some influence from Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars with old school hip-hop, Mark W. is what you get and he won’t disappoint. Check out the “Talking to Myself Experience” on YouTube to get an inside look and full run through of his recently released album “Talking to Myself: Side A.”
Thurz
You can hear the old school hip-hop influences all over Thurz’s discography. With lyrics expressing life as a person of color in Los Angeles on top of slow and steady jazz inspired beats as well as hyped up bass heavy beats, Thurz leads the next generation of hip-hop on the West Coast. A truly dynamic artist that can go from hype tracks like, “Wheel of Fortune” to slower tracks like, “Long Live.” He showcases his art and process to his over 12k fans on Instagram. You can see and hear the level of detail that Thurz puts into each aspect of his creations.
Mack 10
In the game since the early 90’s and still producing heat to this day, Inglewood rapper Mack 10 carries old school hip-hop to modern times. Back in the 90’s when West Coast hip-hop was at its most golden times, Mack 10 was a close associate with Ice Cube. He produced multiple hits with him including, “Foe Life” and “Connect For Life.” Mack 10 went on to collab with many other legends from the 90’s like E-40, Nate Dogg, and Timbaland. While his collaborations take his talent to another level, he can still hop on a track alone and bring the same quality and energy. He proves that on his track, “Hate In Yo Eyes.”
Blu
Collaborating with some of the greatests in the underground hip-hop scene like MF DOOM and Madlib, Inglewood rapper Blu has talent that is validated. Pulling inspiration from those he’s worked with, Blu presents lyrically dense rap over jazz influenced hip-hop beats. His discography is so intricate and diverse that there is no way to hit a dead end. A good place to start is his track with Exile, “Dancing in the Rain,” which perfectly embodies a rainy day. My personal favorite project of his is his joint project, “Bad Neighbor” with MED and Madlib.
SiR
Fusing aspects of hip-hop with innovative R&B sounds, SiR showcases his bold yet gentle vocals on sensual and spirited hip-hop beats. While not quite a rapper, SiR deserves a spot on this list for his impact and presence within the hip-hop scene working with some of the greatest rappers alive, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne. Perfecting the sound of a cool summer day, his music will be the vibe setter for your chill days out with friends, starting with “D’Evils.”
D Smoke
First gaining attention after winning Netflix’s first season of Rhythm & Flow, D Smoke continues to blow up. If the talent is cosigned by Chance the Rapper, Cardi B, and T.I., you know this is an artist you don’t want to miss. While he has collaborated with some big artists like E-40 and Ari Lennox, he doesn’t need anyone else on the track to produce heat. He proves that on his competition winning track, “Last Supper.” This track feels like an anthem from the lyrics to the beat, then throws us a surprise ending that proves why it won Rhythm & Flow. D Smoke is some of the hottest talent to come out of Inglewood.
Domo Genesis
The best way I can describe Domo Genesis is just straight up dope. He proves that rap is a form of continuously malleable art through his various projects and collaborations. Originally gaining fame through his involvement with Odd Future and their hit singles “Rella,” Domo Genesis eventually went solo and onto produce some of his best work. His debut album as a solo artist, “Genesis” gave us some of the greatest songs of all time. His song “Dapper” featuring Anderson .Paak is perfect for a smoke sesh with your favorite homies. Just listening to this song you can visualize you and your friends grooving while listening to it. If you’re a fan of Mac Miller you have to hear their collab, “Coming Back.” Lastly, his verse on Tyler, The Creator’s track, “Rusty” is a must to check out.
Casey Veggies
Casey Veggies also gained fame through his involvement with Odd Future, in fact he was a founding member in 2007. Also eventually parting ways and going solo, Casey Veggies went on to produce project after project featuring big artists like Dej Loaf, Ty Dolla $ign, Mac Miller, and more. His track with Dej Loaf, “Tied Up” went on to be one of the most popular hip-hop tracks in 2015. Casey Veggies’ discography is nothing short of extensive so if you’re looking for fresh music from an Odd Future veteran, start with Casey.
AshBashThaRapper
It’s not everyday you hear a lady spitting such hard bars over an old school hip-hop style beat. It is clear that AshBashThaRapper is from the West Coast with her groovy electric bass heavy beats and LA wordplay. The West Coast influence is evident on her track, “Red Homies,” with a beat Snoop Dogg could hop on any day. AshBash empowers the next generation of rappers coming out of Inglewood. She aspires to support them with her fame by creating a recording studio that is free to use. She’s growing steady with over 50k fans watching and supporting her on Instagram.
InglewoodIV
Yet another Inglewood rapper on Netflix’s series “Rhythm & Flow,” proving that this area brings us some of the best rappers. InglewoodIV brings the pressure to the stage with furious and meaningful performances. InglewoodIV’s song “Shoot Me” initiates an important conversation about police brutality and systemic racism. A strong consistent message throughout the whole track leaves an impact on all who hear it. While some of his tracks have a modern hip-hop sound, there is plenty of old school hip-hop influences throughout his whole discography. A song of InglewoodIV’s that embodies the West Coast sound is “Ommt (On My Momma Tho).”
Shawn Chrystopher
While Shawn Chrystopher may have the smallest following out of the rest of the rappers on this list, he still compares and oftentimes exceeds the quality being put out by other Inglewood rappers. You can hear influence from other Inglewood rappers like Blu and Thurz throughout his discography. He throws heavy bars over slower tracks like “Faithful” as well as harder tracks like, “Jaded.” Shawn Chrystopher continues to prove that Inglewood rappers are some of the most dynamic artists in the game.
As you can hear, Inglewood is nowhere short of talented rappers influenced by the old school West Coast hip-hop era. From veterans in the rap game still making hits, to fresh talent just starting to make a name for themselves, Inglewood is guaranteed to bring the heat.
