In a massive deal, the WNBA has new agreements with ESPN, Prime Video, and NBC to broadcast WNBA games for the next 11 years to the tune of $2.2 billion.
As the popularity of women’s basketball as increased, this massive deal comes right in time for the WNBA, a league that hasn’t exactly thrived in the mainstream. The WNBA has had 15 games average over a million viewers which tied for the league record and we’re only at the halfway point of the season. The WNBA will receive $200 million per season, also leaving room for the league to potentially make more should they decide to sell rights packages to other platforms.
Giving WNBA Stars What They Deserve
WNBA players are notoriously underpaid, with a range of anywhere from $64,000 to just over $250,000, which is insane when you remember that the NBA league minimum is just over $950,000. This deal should lead to a much-increased salary cap.
With amazing players such as MVP-favorite A’Ja Wilson, rookies Angel Reese and Caitlyn Clark, and veteran stars such as Diana Taurasi, Britney Griner, Nneka Ogwumike, Arike Ogunbowale, etc., the league is in great shape and these ladies have been playing fantastic basketball all season long. This is going to be a continuing trend as more young talent enters the WNBA.
The league will only get more popular and engaging from this point forward, and it’s great to see the WNBA finally get some much needed and much deserved recognition & support.
