Winter X-Games Athletes Set to Redefine the Meaning of X-Games Mode

Starting today and wrapping up on Sunday, January 28th, some of the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world will take Winter X Games “Mode” to a whole new level.

Returning to Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain for the 22nd consecutive year (out of 27 years), Winter X-Games 2024 will provide fans a chance to witness female and male athletes redefine what it means to be “On X-Games Mode”. Competing in disciplines such as Slopestyle, Big Air, SuperPipe, Knuckle Huck (my personal favorite), and the newest competition, a live SLVSH event.

“Oh my god, he on X-Games Mode” you’ve heard it, you may have said it, but where does it come from? Going viral following a vine in 2015, this saying has been used across skateparks, dirt bike tracks, and of course, the winter resorts since the mid 90s to describe unbelievable, mind blowing acts of athleticism. To put into perspective just how impressive these athletes are, here are some looks at highlights of last years Winter X-Games and the breakdown of each discipline.

Winter X-Games Ft. Knuckle Huck, SLVSH CUP and More

Over the years, Winter X-Games has added more culture to the competitions, previously with the introduction of Knuckle Huck, and for the first time this year, a live SLVSH Cup. Now for those of you who aren’t familiar with the disciplines, here is a quick and easy breakdown of the different competitions.

Slopestyle

Athletes navigate a course of kinked metal rails, oddly shaped boxes, broken looking jumps, and send themselves over 80 feet in the air. Don’t believe me, check out last year’s Men’s Ski Slopestyle Competition course and see for yourself.

Big Air

One jump for all the bragging rights. Athletes send their biggest and most stylish aerial maneuvers off a 70 foot jump traveling over 90ft in the Air. This is where many worlds first go down, including just last year when Megan Oldham became the first female skier to land a triple cork in competition.

SuperPipe

One of the most anticipated competitions of the week takes place on a 575 foot long, 22 foot high U-Shaped SuperPipe. Athletes flip and spin down the pipe as they throw themselves off the ice walls at such precise degrees with no margin for error. Athletes Kelly Clark, Shawn White, Tanner Hall, and the late Sarah Burke helped put the SuperPipe on the map, but the young guns have taken it upon themselves to elevate the competition.

Knuckle Huck

For the fans, from the culture. The “Knuckle Huck” has been around since well before I joined the freeski community back in 2007, and is one of the most entertaining, gravity bending tricks an athlete can do on a jump, without even hitting the jump. For the first time this year female skiers will have a chance to compete in the Knuckle Huck competition. X-Games Athletes like Zeb Powell, Matěj Švancer and Jesper Tjäder have revolutionized how younger generations view the knuckle, and I mean, after you check out this video you will know why.

SLVSH CUP

For all you non-mountain folks, this is the skiers’ and snowboarders’ version of playing “PIG” or “HORSE” in basketball. Athletes call a trick, and if they execute, their competitor needs to land the trick otherwise they get a letter. Around since 2014, SLVSH is making its first X-Games appearance this year, and matches are already underway as the winner receives a spot in the Men’s Ski Knuckle Huck with an additional live coverage competition Friday morning!
