Reflecting on this year, it’s virtually impossible to encapsulate it all into one coherent thought, let alone a song or video. However, Portland OG, Vursatyl has tackled that exact task on his new track, “Let Me Know”.
Vursatyl gained international acclaim as one of the founding members of the Portland-based hip-hop group, Lifesavas. With that group, the PDX MC was at the forefront of two albums of next-level chemistry, esoteric lyricism, and sticky choruses.
As a solo rapper and singer-songwriter, Vursatyl has released several singles, a 2015 album, Crooked Straights, and worked extensively with artists like De La Soul, Talib Kweli, George Clinton, and Run the Jewels. It goes without saying that he is a cornerstone of Portland’s illustrious Hip-Hop and Rap tapestry, so new material is always going to be cause for excitement.
On, “Let Me Know”, Vursatyl challenges our perceptions and tackles topics like Coronavirus and the capitol insurrection in confronting and bold fashion. The wordy, sharp, verses, disorienting instrumental from Jake One, and earworm chorus culminate in something whose scope is as massive as the chaotic and confusing year this has been.
The video reflects the same energy, and shows the rapper in several different settings and occupations, pushing subversive takes on the current sociopolitical landscape.
