One of Portland’s own creative minds, Verbz, has released a new podcast titled “Crate Diggers”, exploring the vinyl collections of Northwest hip hop artists. Episode 1, featuring Calvin Valentine, came out yesterday and I am very impressed! I love hip hop, specifically Northwest hip hop, but before listening to Episode 1 of Crate Diggers last night, vinyl and digging were things I knew little to nothing about. My dad had some old Beach Boys records that we would listen to when I was a kid and one summer I was given a “Frumpies Forever” 45’s, which I listened to it every day on a turn table that happened to come with the house my mom and I were renting on the Oregon Coast at the time. But, that’s about as far as my awareness went. I decided to listen to the podcast because I’m a huge fan of Calvin Valentine’s music, and was interested in hearing a little bit out what inspires him. With a podcast like this, where interviewer and interviewee are discussing something they’re each passionate about, it can be easy to forget that there are going to be people listening who don’t know all of the details and don’t have the same history with the hobby as you do. Verbz has created an entertaining and informative show that is not difficult to follow, even for someone who doesn’t have a lot of knowledge on the subject. I can honestly say that I’m looking forward to hearing more.
