UFC Edmonton Main Event: Brandon Moreno vs. Amir Albazi
UFC Edmonton’s main event featured a five round flyweight showdown between No. 2-ranked Brandon Moreno (22-8-2) and No. 3-ranked Amir Albazi (17-2-0).
It was an impressive showcase from the former flyweight champion as Brandon Moreno made his first appearance in the octagon since his split decision defeat to Brandon Royval in February.
Mexico’s Moreno displayed supreme striking inside the cage as he peppered Albazi’s legs and face throughout the UFC Edmonton main event fight.
The first round was close between the two. However, Moreno landed the more effective shots.
As the fight progressed, it stayed on the feet, where Moreno had a clear boxing advantage and fought smartly behind a stinging jab.
Albazi attempted four takedowns throughout the fight but only secured one in the second round.
Albazi’s face eventually became busted and bloodied from Moreno’s consistent foot offense, which gave the judges scoring the contest a bad look.
Ultimately, at the end of the five rounds, it was clear that Moreno had outlanded and effectively damaged Albazi.
Result: Moreno via Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46)
UFC Edmonton Co-main Event: Erin Blanchfield vs. Rose Namajunas
UFC Edmonton’s co-main event featured a hard-fought five round dispute between No. 3-ranked Erin Blanchfield (13-2-0) and No. 5-ranked Rose Namajunas (14-7-0).
These top women’s flyweights put it all on the line in Saturday’s UFC Edmonton co-main event as Blanchfield and Namajunas went the distance.
The former women’s strawweight champion Namajunas opened the fight looking sharp and ready to cruise to a decision victory as she sought to keep the fight on her terms.
Namajunas could keep the fight standing, effectively counter-striking the forward and pressuring Blanchfield.
Namajunas maintained this for the first two rounds; however, she started to slow down visibly because of the high pace of the fight.
This is where Blanchfield started to ease into her fighting style, where she got in close on Namajunas and began effectively damaging Namajunas on the feet. With Namajunas having to respect Blanchfield’s striking, the grappler could then mix in takedowns on the former champion successfully.
From there, Blanchfield dominantly racked up control time and damage on Namajunas and started turning the five-round fight’s tides.
Come the end of the fight, Blanchfield had narrowly scraped by on the judges’ scorecards after securing the final three rounds.
Result: Blanchfield via Unanimous Decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47)
