There’s a reason Runtz is Leafly‘s Strain of the Year. Crossing two strains that have undeniable characteristics translate to a delectably sweet treat, Runtz is just as tasty as it is potent.
Don’t forget to mention that it’s named after something that is easy to associate with a sweet and joyful time. Arguably no other strain this year checked off all the aforementioned boxes as well as Runtz.
Now, I was late to the party for Runtz, admittedly. The first I had heard of the strain was, like many other casual stoners, when a viral clip was shared across social media.
It’s a known fact that Black people set trends. However, I would have never imagined that an underage youth would spark an enormous amount of interest in a mysterious, still unconfirmed strain. There was a trickle-down effect, surely. Naturally, if you can’t find Obama Runtz, you’ll settle for the next best thing – Runtz, right? Or, at least I did.
Well, my experience with the previously elusive (to me) strain was one for the books. While I didn’t receive a full sample size, I did receive enough to give it a go a few times. The farm responsible for growing this chart-topper is Re Up Farms from Salem, Oregon. Specializing in small-batch, high-quality cannabis, Re Up Farms is a Tier 1 licensed cannabis producer.
The buds were rather small. What they lacked in size, they made up for in the amount of trichome coverage and deep green hues with purple peeking through. This batch of Runtz smelled great right when I opened the jar, an overwhelmingly sweet fruity smell hit my nose properly earning it’s name.
I would like to say the smoking experience was otherworldly to feed into the hype, but it wasn’t. It was a sweet, delicious more relaxing hybrid that is a solid, comfortable smoke. Runtz likely isn’t going to send your uncle who hasn’t smoked in 15 years to the E.R. for an anxiety attack, but it will have him raiding the food supply.
My greatest wish was to have more to sample. I would have loved to test Runtz like my previous reviews for the West Coast Weed Tour. A part of me wonders if it was “chill” enough for an early morning yoga session. I do understand how such a strain could take over the stores, streets, and social networks – it’s the missing sweet satisfaction that 2020 took from most of us.
