About The Devil Wears Prada
Contrast gives art its dimension. The collision of seemingly opposing elements sparks tension, breathing life into any canvas. For The Devil Wears Prada, contrast is everything—they deftly balance metallic turbulence with hardcore intensity, provocative lyricism with melodic catharsis. Between these extremes, the band—Mike Hranica (vocals), Jeremy DePoyster (guitar, vocals), Kyle Sipress (guitar), Jonathan Gering (keys, synths, programming, production), Giuseppe Capolupo (drums), and Mason Nagy (bass)—have crafted an ever-evolving signature sound layered with rich sonic textures. This dynamic interplay defines the group’s eighth full-length album, Color Decay [Solid State Records]
They’ve commanded this space since forming in 2005. Highlighting the band’s growing influence, fans voted 2009’s With Roots Above and Branches Below among the “5 Greatest Metalcore Albums” in a Revolver poll, with the outlet calling it “a true metalcore landmark.” The Devil Wears Prada have since notched six consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart, including Dead Throne (2011), 8:18 (2013), Space EP (2015), Transit Blues (2016), The Act (2019), and ZII EP (2021).
ZII served as a sequel to one of the band’s most beloved projects, 2010’s Zombie EP, earning praise from mxdwn, who called it “phenomenal,” while Metal Injection claimed, “This mini-concept has outlived the zombie revival.” In the wake of the EP, the band has amassed over a quarter of a billion cumulative streams and views, cementing their legacy in modern metalcore.
In 2021, the band retreated to remote hideaways in Wisconsin and Desert Hot Springs, California, to focus on writing and recording. This time, Jonathan Gering took the reins as producer, working closely with the group to craft a layered and immersive sonic landscape that would become Color Decay
The band first teased Color Decay with “Watchtower” and “Sacrifice,” ramping up anticipation for the full album. On the single “Salt,” a driving riff, buoyed by luminous keys, gives way to a subdued verse, with melodic vocals drifting over an otherworldly soundscape before snapping back into the hypnotic hook: “Pour the salt into the wounds, let the rain wash over you.”
