“This is the weirdest show we’ve ever played,” The Beths‘ lead vocalist and primary songwriter Liz Stokes told those present at the group’s album release party in Los Angeles.
In fact, it was probably the weirdest show for a lot of those in attendance at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater on Thursday (August 28) as well. Fortunately, weird is good when it comes to creativity, and the evening in question was without question truly delightful.
Whereas the quartet from New Zealand have taken on more serious themes on their fourth studio album, there is a playful charm about them that remains firmly in place. Even when their subject matter isn’t exactly silly and fun as the imagery attached to the music might suggest, their spirit is an uplifting one.
For that reason, the puppets at the historic children’s theatre perfectly embellished the launch of the band’s latest LP, Straight Line Was A Lie. As Liz, Jonah, Ben and Tristan performed fan favorites as well as picks from their new bundle, three puppeteers brought out a range of different dolls to match the mood of each song and had them dance along next to the group as well as with (and sometimes on) audience members.
With that, The Beths essentially soft launched their upcoming tour across North America and Europe, which is set to commence in mid-September. Check out photographs from their one-of-a-kind concert in Southern California, followed by the full list of tour dates.
