It was just like any other day off. I had nothing on my agenda besides the usual chores and relaxing. Around 10 am however my low key day off was thrown right out the window. My buddy Drew and I go way back, friends for a decade now. Hadn’t talked much over the summer since we’ve both been busy. Every time we talk though, it’s like we hung out yesterday.
So I get this call and he’s like, “How adventurous are you feeling today?” Coincidentally, I had woken up that morning with thoughts of traveling abroad. I had thrown on ‘Expedition Unknown’, a show on the Travel Channel that was all about finding lost treasures in the world. Little did I know I was being taken on our own treasure hunt.
My very smart, and never forgetful friend went hiking a few days prior to our journey and had left behind an entire gram of oil. Couldn’t remember the brand or strain but Drew said that he had only taken a dab out of it, and it was definitely worth it. He was adamant that it would be sitting right where he left it, dab tool and all. So I agreed to go adventure for the lost terps.
I’m so busy now that I don’t get out of the city much anymore. Our destination, however, was probably the furthest you could get out of the city for just an afternoon trip. Cedar Ponds is located about 20 minutes outside of Monroe, WA, which itself is 40 minutes outside of Seattle. It was our local swimming hole, that we spent many summers at during high school.

We arrived at our starting point around noon. To really get into the adventure spirit we dabbed, then packed up all of our essential supplies. We set off down the start of the trail. Really you’re walking along the side of a cliff, but we tried to ignore that fact. Climbing down from there into the main swimming hole area, we took this time to make sure we were completely prepared.
What is already a breathtaking view, the incredible beauty continues down – what Google has informed me is called – Young’s Creek. The exact opposite of the city, the area is calm and quiet enough that you can hear birds landing on branches. The trickle of the water calms you as you step from stone to stone. Boulders with visible weathering surrounded by gigantic trees. Some still standing, and others fallen into places that help you cross the rocky terrain.
There were major cliffs to climb down and countless waterfalls. If TLC taught me anything, it was “don’t go chasing waterfalls.” Now here I am following these falls to what seemed like it could have been my death multiple times. Considering it was about 97° outside, I did actually enjoy all the time I spent wading through all the pools. Glacier water is incredibly refreshing when you’re sweating gallons at a time.
As we were getting into the rhythm of bouncing across the rocks, we came to a flat opening. A beam of sunlight shining down on this large slanted rock with a shelf carved out towards the bottom. Upon that shelf almost like a miracle, was the forgotten gram of oil. Finally, after a couple hours, our mission was a success. Excitedly we ran over to it and I swear I could hear angels sing “OOOOO-LEE-UUUMMMM”
This entire journey was brought to you by Oleum Extracts. Oil so damn good you’ll drive an hour and hike down a creek filled with waterfalls for two hours, just for a single gram.
