Thor Ragnarock

Spoiler Free Review of Thor: Ragnarok

Thor Ragnarok Synopsis

Thor Ragnarok begins when we last saw Thor at the end of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” as he flies off into the universe in search for the rest of the infinity stones. After finding nothing, Thor decides to return home to Asgard to speak with his father, Odin.

Once Thor catches up with Odin, he warns him that Hela, the Goddess of Death is returning to Asgard to claim the throne and kill all who oppose her. Upon her return, Thor faces her and she defeats him quickly and before she can kill him, he is mistakenly teleported to a mysterious planet controlled by a character named the Grand Master who runs a gladiator-style tournament, where slaves compete for their freedom.

Thor must enter the tournament and win to gain his freedom and escape the planet; so he can return to Asgard and stop Hela.  Along the way Thor encounters his brother Loki, fellow Asgardians, and the Hulk. Mark Ruffalo makes his long-awaited return as Bruce Banner and his unstoppable alter-ego.

What I Liked

Cate Blanchett was awesome as Hela, she kicked ass up and down the screen the entire film. I’ve never seen her in a roll like this and she knocked it out of the park, she was Thor’s most menacing foe in a solo film by a long shot, and Blanchett made her the most compelling as well.

The laughs carry this film for a good share, which I wasn’t sure I’d like at first (more on that later.) But once the movie hit the 30-minute mark the laughs were rollin. There were times the entire theater would laugh, but plenty of other scenes when only individuals laughed. To me this was the funniest Marvel movie to date.

The Hulk speaks in this and it’s a nice change of pace. This is the first Hulk movie ever where he’s actually communicating with other members of the Avengers. Ruffalo and Hemsworth have awesome chemistry, whether it’s Bruce Banner or Hulk, they play off each other nicely.

Jeff Goldblum as the Grand Master is a loveable sociopathic weirdo. Goldbum will always and forever kill it.

What Made Me Cringe

The entire opening of the movie sucked. It was forced from the opening line. I didn’t like the jokes and I was worried that the writing was going to be terrible, luckily they pulled it out rather quickly after that.

The plot was so generic. Don’t get me wrong I still loved the movie, but the basic superhero plot is about to play itself out. Marvel will have to start trying new formulas sooner rather than later to keep breaking box office records.

Pleasant Surprises

How much I laughed. There is a lot of quality laughs throughout the film. These movies are predictable but so much fun. Marvel brings these characters to life and it’s always a blast to go along or ride.

Overall Rating

Besides the basic intro and basic plot line, this film is fun as hell and packs in a lot of laughs. I give Thor Ragnarock a 7.5 out of 10. Don’t miss this one, it’s a great entry in the Avengers story arc as we trickle closer and closer to the Infinity Wars.
