Space Camp is a five member band from the heartland. Each artist brings a different approach and sound to the music they create. Described as alternative and pop punk, this indie rock band has a sound that is easy to dance to and listen to.
Mak Krug, drummer, met Kai Austin-Landreth, vocalist, in 2020. As a dark time remembered by the music community, this was an era of creativity. After bringing in Jimmie Twyman in as their guitarist, these three began playing together for fun. When their old friend and bass player, Ben Day, moved back to Oklahoma City, the writing started. Finally, Kai met Jordan Landreth, lead guitarist, and everything fell into place.
Space Camp is Influenced by Metal

With two members having a metal-based background, that style has influenced the way they write. Metal music is just another genre of rock music usually driven aggressively. While Space Camp songs don’t sound aggressive, they’ve turned Twyman into a heavy-handed rhythm guitarist, which most metal bands contain.
I don’t consider Space Camp to be easy listening, but it’s indie rock music that you can dance to.

Space Camp’s Creative Process
Space Camp has multiple members and there are multiple ways to create a song. Kai writes the lyrics which come after the music and the other members try to write their parts around Twyman’s riffs. Occasionally Kai and Jordan have a song already written, and the others write a part to match.
Jimmie is a riff machine, he’s constantly hearing melodies and rhythms in his head.

Tiny Death was written by Jordan and Kai Landreth. Kai remembers writing it about being pregnant with her youngest child when she mourned the things she would have to give up. “It’s about the little tiny deaths you have to mourn in your life.” Kai enjoys being in a band that values her voice, because there are other bands that don’t value a female’s artistic vision.
“It challenges us in a different artistic manner.”

Space Camp’s Community

Space Camp wants to express their gratitude to the fans they do have. It’s a tight knit community, because once they share their next show, those fans show up. A year ago they released their self-titled debut album on Spotify, and those fans were very supportive.
“The reality of five people in a band, everyone has kids and a real job.”
Ben Day
Space Camp will be performing on the second day of Broke Brewery’s anniversary. While touring isn’t an option right now, with so many of the members starting their own families, they are open to booking nearby. To book Space Camp email them at spacecampokc@gmail.com or message them on Instagram.
