Sony has kicked off the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) media frenzy with some juicy news about their next generation game console. The first PlayStation 5 details have dropped and give us a great idea of what the next generation of console gaming will look like.
Out of all the technical details released about the console including 8K viability and full backward compatibility with PlayStation 4 games – the biggest news has to be the inclusion of a solid state drive (SSD). Current consoles have hard disk drives (HDD) which is old technology at this point. Switching from HDD’s to SSD’s will have major ramifications because of how drastically it’ll reduce the time spent on loading screens.
YouTuber MrDalekJD states that Sony teased this technology at work and it reduced a ‘fast travel’ loading screen from 18 seconds to 0.8 seconds. That kind of speed boost has serious implications for game development, gameplay pacing and the scope of open-world environments like those in Red Dead Redemption 2. Sony states that its SSD technology is the most advanced of its kind.
