Seattle’s Parisalexa Pitches “Pity Party” To Charlie Puth On NBC’s Songland

Chances are that some of your favorite singers have sung a song that was written by someone else. But when you try and think of a songwriter, how many can you name compared to the number of singers you can name? Even though songwriters are often severely underappreciated, it’s been a dream of Parisalexa’s to become one. After signing a publishing deal with Kobalt Music, Paris was able to showcase her talents to a national audience on NBC’s new show Songland.

Parisalexa was featured this season pitching her song, “Pity Party”, to Charlie Puth. The song is also available to stream right now. As someone who has followed Paris’ career so far, I’m not surprised that she wrote a quick bop to pitch.

The show gives hopeful songwriters the opportunity to pitch their original songs to an established recording artist. The songwriter performs a verse and a hook in front of whichever artist is the guest of the week along with a panel of three industry heavyweights; Ester Dean, Shane McAnally and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. Immediately following the performance the panel and guest artist critique the song and provide feedback on how they would alter it and make it more personable for themselves.

The top three songwriters get the opportunity to work with one of the panel members to shape the song into something more suitable for the guest artist. The three songwriters come back from their workshop session and perform the revamped song for the guest artist, who then chooses their favorite of the three. John Legend was the guest artist on the debut episode which premiered May 28th. The winning track, “We Need Love,” is already out on all streaming platforms.

I’m hoping that young P moves on to the second round and her track gets the workshop treatment. No matter what the outcome, this is such a major moment for her and songwriters everywhere to get some of the shine that they deserve.
