In a recent postal bulletin, the United States Postal Service (USPS) made a revision to Publication 52 regarding Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail. As of June 6, 2019, a new section 453.7 has been put in for “hemp-based products,” which illustrates the new mailing standards.
These revisions account for the shipping of products that come from both cannabis and industrial hemp. This is a momentous turn of events for the burgeoning CBD industry that is now legal in all 50 states with the passing of the Farm Bill.
Hemp and CBD products are now domestically mailable, but naturally, under specific conditions. First, the sender must verify their license from the Department of Agriculture. Second, the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) level of their hemp products can’t exceed a 0.3 percent limit. Once the 2018 Farm Bill is in full effect, USPS said they expect to further modify their currying conditions as states begin to firmly purpose plans.
There are a multitude of game-changing aspects to this revision to the auspicious postal code. Albeit an independent agency of the executive branch of government, USPS responding to demand and requests for shipping CBD & Hemp products is huge. This is a turn of events that will benefit both our economy, people, and society as a whole.
Medical
CBD products have been making leaps and bounds in treating a number of bodily conditions. For example, evidence has been showing extremely positive effects of CBD on epilepsy patients. The ease of getting these CBD products to medical patients in need will prove equally as beneficial as the privacy anyone gets from having it legally sent to their home.
Economic
Congress still has control over the USPS. Despite this, they get no tax dollars. But, they’re still technically a part of the federal government even as an independent agency. What this translates to is that the Postal Service gains funding solely from the sale of postage, products, and services to remain operational. With the booming marketplace projections for the CBD & hemp market in the coming years, this could be an extremely profitable move for the USPS.
Societal
USPS is going to ship cannabis products! This is a huge step towards eliminating negative stigmas surrounding cannabis users. If the United States Postal Service is willing to ship CBD & hemp products domestically, imagine the possibilities.
As cannabis gains legalization across the US, it’s not crazy to think one day you could have any cannabis products legally brought to your doorstep by the USPS.
