I’ve been up on this guy’s music since around 2012 and I’ve even rocked a couple of stages alongside him too. Shelton has always held a natural presence and special tone on the mic. The welcomed addition to Tyler Dopps’ deep musical backdrops have always complimented each other perfectly.
Natural talent in their respective crafts was incredibly easy to notice early on. Early on I couldn’t really resonate with Shelton’s lyrics but infectious choruses and a strong knack for song structure managed to keep my attention with each release. His lyricism was never weak it was more so due to the fact that I was older and couldn’t connect with his subject matter.
That is no longer the case. Over the past few years Tyler has been running around with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis while Shelton took some time off music. The Awake EP is a culmination of their recent work.
Shelton Harris – Awake EP
The duo recently found their way into the studio again and Shelton took some life notes on what he has seen from his peripherals. Tyler has brought his production game up a couple notches and you’ll notice right away that the is ‘Awake’ EP features two boys who have grown into men.
‘Strangers’ is one the EP’s most noteworthy tracks. A beautiful emotional ride for three minutes and forty seven seconds while both artists showcase their respective skills.
They have put up some numbers over the past month and listening through this tape shows why this is upper-echelon Seattle music.
Fitting their style with the current sound, records like ‘Coattail’ will fit in on your current iTunes playlist while ‘God Complex’ should have you straight geeking.
I really suggest letting this one play front to back and shout out to all the features who killed it as well.
