Savannah Bananas Shows How A-peel-ing Baseball Can Be to 42,000 Fans
On July 13th the Savannah Bananas landed in DC for a sold-out game at Nats Park. Having lived outside of DC for my whole life, I’ve been to plenty of games at Nats Park but never have I seen it as packed as it was for the Savannah Bananas.
I’m going to give you a run-down on who the Savannah Bananas are, how the DC game went, and share some of my favorite moments from the game. So let’s get started!
Who Are The Savannah Bananas?
When people ask me who the Savannah Bananas are, I always respond with “They’re like the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball”. They bring the fun that you see from minor league games to the big leagues. They’re a team that even the most avid sport hater can enjoy, and a team the most enthusiastic sport fan can enjoy.
Who Do They Play?
There are three teams that fall under the Savannah Banana name. We have the namesake Savannah Bananas, the Party Animals, and the Firefighters. The Savannah Bananas and the Party Animals were the first two teams, and the Firefighters joined the league in 2023.
What Was The Game Like?
I’m so glad you asked! Now, as I said before I’ve been to plenty of baseball games growing up and have recently had the chance to film and run graphics for college baseball which gave me a new appreciation for the sport. That being said I have never enjoyed watching a game like I did while watching the Savannah Bananas.
We got there about an hour and a half before the game started, and it was already packed. Of course it’s going to be packed when you’ve sold 42,000 tickets but it was insane. After waiting in the merch line for anywhere between 30-45 minutes (it was a looooong line) we went to our seats. Well, my parents went to their seats, I went as close to the field as I could to see the players warm up.
As the players were warming up, fans got the chance to interact with the players and even get autographs and selfies with them. It was fun getting to see all the players goof around a bit during warmups and to actually get to talk to them, but I was ready for it to start.
Before the game officially begins, Princess Potassia comes out on the field and performs a song about the joy of the Savannah Bananas and how much the fans mean to the team.
And then, the game begins. DC’s matchup was the Savannah Bananas versus the Firefighters.
In all honesty, with all of the bits going on during the game, it’s actually kind of hard to focus on the actual baseball. I mean, when kids are being rolled around in barrels, a banana with washboard abs starts twerking, or even a kid spraying his dad with water from a firehose, would you be able to solely focus on the game? No! And that’s what makes it fun.
The DC game had some special elements to honor DC. From the passing of the Bill’s (both teams have to pass a man named Bill all the way down to home plate), a player coming out surrounded by military men, and Gio Gonzáles returned to Nats Park as a Savannah Banana player.
The game ended with the Savannah Bananas winning 4-3 and was all done in about two hours. Out of all of the sporting events I’ve been to in my life, and trust me there’s been a lot, this has got to have been my favorite experience. I firmly believe that everyone should go to a Savannah Bananas game one day and just enjoy the wackiness of it all. Keep an eye out on their socials for information about their next season.
