Los Angeles and the Bay Area are the first two places that come to mind when someone mentions California. Yet, what we tend to forget is how expansive the state truly is. It’s ripe with culture and a broad range of them too. It’s now time for us to take a closer look at what the capital of Sacramento has to offer the hip-hop community.
Much to our delight, there’s a whole lot going on here. Read on to find out which Sacramento rappers we’re vouching for this year.
These Rappers from Sacramento Are Killing It
Mozzy
Hailing from the Oak Park neighborhood in Sacramento, Mozzy has brought a great deal of shine to his city in recent years. He was featured on the 2018 Black Panther soundtrack and even won a Grammy Award for it. He’s been on the rise ever since, releasing one remarkable album after another. We’ve been following him for a while, so it only seemed fair that we give him a shoutout now that he’s on the other side. His time has come and we’re here to show him the love he deserves.
The Philharmonik
Here’s some seasoning to add flavor to our list. The Philharmonik isn’t your average artist — he plays instruments, raps, sings, produces and engineers his projects. His catalog, as a result, is vibrant, lush and colorful. If you like OutKast (get it together if you don’t!), then you’ll love this guy.
Stunna Girl
Stunna Girl got her start as a social media influencer. When her track “Runaway” went viral on TikTok in 2019 and birthed the #RunwayChallenge, she began taking her music more seriously. Also from Oak Park, she had a troubled childhood and has even admitted getting her first mugshot at the age of 11. Yet, she made it through and is now thriving.
Yumz Awkword
“My hope is people relate to my music and if they are in that dark place we all find ourselves in every now and then, it helps them through it,” Yumz Awkword says about his product. “I honestly just want to take care of my family for generations to come.”
Born in North Carolina, this spitter has been making music since the age of 16. By 19, he was leading the Awkword Society collective (aka. AWK14). As he started taking strides toward his dream, he moved to Sacramento to join forces with the BedRoomTrap label. The city now proudly claims him.
Dsteez
Dsteez aka “The don” aka “Fuck a n**** mean” has accomplished more than his fellow aspirants at an early age. This traces back to his versatility, because the North Sacramento MC keeps switching up his style and subject matter. From drill to emo to conscious rap, he can do it all … and he has his whole life ahead of him!
EGDABEAST
Rapper and producer EGDABEAST was born an artist — it just flows out of him. Another champion of the city, it’s only a matter of time before he enters the conversation for the most skilled lyricists of the modern era.
“Sacramento Is My Village” he says. “Music is my safe haven. I’m blessed to express myself in a dope way and continue to be true to who I am and who I want to be.”
Chuuwee
Those who push the boundaries always operate in a lane of their own. This is why Chuuwee stands out — while mastering the traditions of hip-hop, he has also brought in external elements such as punk and R&B. This way, he is able to distinguish himself and always draw (positive) attention. He is currently on his Dio was Here Tour and has major plans for the future. Stay tuned!
Nash Boogie
This is where attitude and creativity meet. Sacramento native Nash Boogie’s brand rides on his authenticity and he makes it a point to remain consistent. From trauma to stories about street life to sociopolitical matters, he covers a lot of ground in the studio and we’re grateful to him for that.
