Killer Mike and El-P are on a quest to save the world, one LP at a time. Run The Jewels is back with RTJ4, the duo’s fourth album. The project was dropped early, the day after the music industry’s Black Out Tuesday held in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests that are filling our nation.
It’s incredibly fitting that Killer Mike and EL-P dropped this highly-awaited project early in light of what’s happening in our country. Four Minneapolis police officers murdered George Floyd on camera for the entire world to see and the world is sick of it. Protests have exploded in all 50 states and across the globe to rise up against systemic racism that radically apparent in our country and countries all over the world.
Killer Mike is one of the loudest leaders in the black community and spoke at a press conference in Atlanta to speak his heart on the current state of race relations in the United States of America.
RTJ4 is the well-spoken and booming exclamation point after Killer Mike’s passionate speech. Jaime and Mike’s crispy battle-rap delivery is as quirky and hard-hitting as ever. The verses-for-verse style this duo has been crafting over their first three LP’s has been honed to a deadly edge in episode four.
Killer Mike’s combination of delivery and lyricism is rarely matched in the hip-hop space. El-P’s puzzles the mind with rhyme schemes and a style that is truly unique amongst his peers.
RTJ4 is a rare project that is not only poignant and thought-provoking but slaps hard enough to turn heads at a red light. This project is full of A-List features: DJ Premier, 2 Chainz, Pharrell Williams, and Zack de la Rocha make appearances. Gangsta Boo’s presence on “walking in the snow” is dope and she’s always a pleasant cherry on top of the RTJ sundae.
