Make sure to check out our resident photographer O.Dography’s ‘Summer of 1Take’ photo album from Summer Jam here!
Kube 93’s 2014 Summer Jam had a few set backs but had some great weather with good artists putting on an even better show. First of all we had time struggling with event staff figuring out our parking and vendor privileges but all issues were solved in due time (Big shout out to the security staff aka half of CWU’s football squad). Second of all, Rick Ross canceled and I spoke to some fans who were disappointed with the news. Without the MMG emperor, Summer Jam at the Gorge road on with a dope line up and Kendrick Lamar shut the crowd down at the end. The crowd got to see the Legion of Boom as well as Power 105’s Breakfast club make quest appearances during the event. Over the course of the day we ran into plenty of Northwest artists including Cassow, who made the trek all the way up from Portland.

Friday night started out with some with an throwback all star cast lined with Bone Thugs and Harmony and west coast legends Ice Cube, E-40, and Too Short. The crowd was active and fans enjoyed hits from the legends that date from now back until many gorge visitor’s youth. On Friday we got to chill outside of the venue with Northwest OG Neema, and pick his brain about the Northwest scene. As Mr. 10k himself hustled CD’s like no other we sat back and discussed his opinion on up and comers in our region. He had a lot of good things to say about Raz and Nacho Picasso, who happen to be two of our favorites to pick up some more national buzz over the course of the next year.

Saturday Joey and myself drove out to summer Jam early to meet up with OD. OD, Joey, and Ryangot to grab some footage starting early with the Sky Movement crew. Sky Movement hosted their own side stage that featured many up and coming artists mainly hailing from around the Northwest. Will Jordan and Clemm Rishad came through with monster performances alongside a live band. These guys have wrote for some of the biggest artists in the game and also make bangers for their solo projects. Clemm also brought out the OG Kurrupt during his set and the crowd rushed the stage as he preformed classic verses from his catalog.

After 4+ hours of semi-bucket hat protected weather we finally made out way to the main stage to catch the headliners of Summer Jam day 2. Our friends T.S and his wifey met up with us just in time to watch Big Krit start. Personally I am a huge fan of Krit and I noticed I was not the only one. The crowd knew just about every word to his set that was spread amongst his entire catalog. In between tracks Krit let us know that he appreciated the northwest’s constant love and support for his music and his Dj played ridiculously low 808 samples.

Next up Kid Ink gave a hype performance that again included tracks from all over his catalog but received a very very warm reception to his recent hits with Chris Brown.

Summer Jam was treated to a performance from Seattle’s god father of rap, Sir-Mix-Alot. Sir Mix let the young’ins in on some Northwest classics with Posses on Broadway and the popular Baby Got Back.

Big Sean brought a live band along with him and they entrained the crowd while Sean did numerous singles from his catalog and well as popular quest feature verses. Big Sean also wasted no time in-between songs to motivate the crowd to chase their dreams, big ups to a guy who has reached success and wants to see others follow suit.

The last set of the night was the much anticipated Kendrick Lamar. He came out andy he crowd started to lose their mind and he cut the lights and music to tell the crowd he needed more energy. Upon reentry after a count down, Kendrick had everybody jumping up and down screaming out his imagery of growing up in Compton as a youngster. The inter scope prodigy performed his hits from Good Kid Mad City and a few guest verses from featured popular songs. I was wishing Kendrick would give us a taste of something new but he just shut the crowd down with ease and let us know that he always feel the love/energy in the Northwest.

We want to give a big shout out to Kube 93 for hosting summer jam, Sky Movement for putting in work, and the gorge staff for providing a safe and positive event for hip-hop lovers. We were blessed with great weather, great scenery, and awesome music…damn it feels good to be from the Northwest.
