On April 20, 2021, PotPunks, located in Los Angeles, California, released a new NFT digital collectible project. This announced their phase one launch of 69 digital characters at the Merry Jane 4/20 Celebration.
The diverse world of cannabis lovers and advocates inspired this project. PotPunks decided to go one step further though, by partnering with Project Mission Green, a charity founded by reform advocate Weldon Angelos. With this partnership, PotPunks is able to use the connections made by Angelos to enter the world of entertainment. They also have close connections to the political world, and they seek to make some real changes. Project Mission Green has been responsible for many very high-profile drug reform bills and pardons in the last decade.
Why PotPunks?
Angelos describes PotPunks as a great way to celebrate the cannabis community, as it underlines their commitment to long-term advocacy. As well as continuing to innovate how they spread the importance of this mission. In the past, Angelos worked with the Obama and Trump administrations on addressing the injustices of drug prohibition. He is currently working with the Biden administration to further this cause. Angelos works with entertainers like Snoop Dogg, Ty Dolla $ign, and Alicia Keys. Partnering with celebrities allows for more recognition of the cause he and the mission are fighting for.
With the partnership of PotPunks and Project Mission Green, Angelos says “their work can speak to a whole new realm of activists who understand how the blockchain, cryptocurrency, and NFTs can also play an important role in supporting necessary reform”.
What Are PotPunks?
In homage to the original CryptoPunks and a response to the expanding world of NFTs, PotPunks was born. Every time a PotPunk sells, a percentage of the proceeds is deposited through a Smart Contract on the Ethereum network to The Weldon Project. A project lead, Sergio Stephano, stated that by using the power of blockchain and NFT technology, they hope that charity donations will grow vastly as new PotPunks are minted or traded. Thus also allowing the PotPunks community to grow.
Those that own PotPunks or have had them minted in their likliness don’t just get to hold onto the digital token as it’s sole owner, they’ll also get access to exclusive content, digital seshes, and more. PotPunks seeks to build an actual community around the NFT’s which brings a whole new aspect of ownership.
