Pop Smoke, a young New York native, has been met with a tragic and untimely death at his new home in Beverly Hills late last night. While spending the day showing off his new digs and gift bags he was receiving for his album’s success at #7 on the Billboard 200, his address was shown. At 4 am his home was invaded by multiple masked gunmen and he was fatally shot multiple times, per TMZ.
Pop had been on an insane trajectory for his anthemic drill music over last year or so. Since releasing his debut album Meet The Woo back in summer 2019 produced by popular UK producer 808Mello, he had been skyrocketing to success. Most notably for his lead single off the debut album “Welcome To The Party.”
The single came at the perfect time to captivate the rising drill scene in Brooklyn and London. He was able to secure features from the likes of Nicki Minaj, Skepta, and even score a feature on Travis Scott’s newest JACKBOYS album. His raspy vocals and hyphy flow took him veritably into the mainstream with his February 7th follow-up, Meet The Woo 2.
Pop Smoke Dies At 20-Years-Old In Beverly Hills
This sequel was already bringing him further into the limelight, with slappers like “Dior,” and “Wolves.” The man’s hoarse cadence had an undeniable force behind it in conjunction with the rowdy drill beats he spat on. Pop Smoke had a Desiigner, DMX, and Tech N9ne-ish sound to him that the clubs are going to spin indefinitely. The deluxe version of the new album comes with 16 tracks and has features from artists like Gunna, NAV, PnB Rock, Quavo, and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.
Pop Smoke could have been the exact vibe rap needs right now to take a break from all the auto-tune melodic rapping and Atlanta-inspired music that’s currently popping. He could have filled a niche that hasn’t truly been under occupation for years. 2020 was undoubtedly going to be his big year. Rest in peace, king. Listen to his new project Meet The Woo 2 below and burn one for the young goat taken too soon.
