Open Cannabis Consumption Permitted At This Year’s New York State Fair

This year, the New York State Fair will allow its guests to smoke marijuana where tobacco is permitted.

The policy remains consistent with the state law passed back in March. The law allows the use of cannabis in the state. What makes New York special is that they are the first state to allow the use of cannabis in public where tobacco can be used.

As a result of the law passed, the specific smoking policy, which is available on the New York State Fair website, states the following:

“Smoking is not permitted in the following areas: in any building or under cover; in any of the picnic areas; within the confines of Kiddieland; the Midway; the grassy area of Chevy Court; at the Veterans and 9/11 Memorials; or within the State Park at the Fair. Smoking is permitted on the Fairgrounds in other general areas that are not prohibited by New York State Law. Tobacco products will not be sold anywhere on the Fairgrounds.”

The New York State fair takes place from August 20th to September 6th.

This is not only a win for the people but for the culture as well. New York is helping to further bring cannabis use to normalcy by allowing it in public areas the same way tobacco is. They may have been the newest state to legalize cannabis, but they are really changing the industry and culture by allowing the use and possession of cannabis to be seen in public.

Though cannabis use is legal in the state of New York, home cultivation and retail cannabis shops are still not. Unfortunately, this won’t change until regulators issue rules allowing it. With the expectations to bring all of that to fruition, New York should see regulations set and shops opened sometime next year. Until then, consumers can enjoy funnel cakes and cannabis risk-free from and stigma-free at the 2021 New York State Fair.
