This week RMR is continuing our new segment New Music Monday, where we run down the best tracks released each week. This week we have some great songs to recommend for your summer playlist!
A lot of incredible tracks were released this week across multiple genres. For this episode, we are again focusing on new hip-hop and electronic tracks, as well as some pop and rock influenced tracks. Our list includes Lil Baby, DDG, King Von, LUCKI, Skream, Taylor Swift and more!
New Music Monday – July 10, 2023
“Merch Madness”- Lil Baby
To kick off New Music Monday, Lil Baby released a new single this Friday, “Merch Madness.” The song was released to celebrate the Fanatics Global Volunteering Day, a charity event that took place on June 27. He helped give away $20 million of merchandise across the country. The lyrics of the track referenced the giveaway, “Real trench baby, business with Fanatics. This like twenty million on a giveaway. Twenty buses, twenty cities, stadium to stadium.” Lil Baby followed up the event and song with a great music video, which shows him giving out his merchandise to kids in need. Such a great song and a great cause!
“Trynna Link”- DDG
We also got a new track from DDG this week. The track is titled “Trynna Link” and is the third single from his upcoming album Maybe It’s ME... This will be DDG’s fifth studio record and it is set to be a huge hit. He has already released tracks from the record that feature big names like Luh Tyler and NLE Choppa. “Trynna Link,” is a classic DDG track, it has a great high hat driven beat as well as a melodic chorus that gets stuck in the listener’s head. So far, “Trynna Link” has been doing great and there was a great music video released for the track as well. It is definitely worth checking out!
“2021 Vibes”- LUCKI
Staying in the hip hop category, we also got a new album from LUCKI this week. His new album “s*x m*ney dr*gs” was released this past Friday and it is already racking up the streams. One of the standout tracks from the record is the fifth track “2021 Vibes.” The track includes a simple beat but it’s great, nonetheless. Despite the laid-back beat, LUCKI still finds pockets to rap over, making for an overall great song.
“Heartless (feat. Tee Grizzley)” – King Von
And finally, to round out the hip-hop for this week’s New Music Monday, King Von’s estate released a new track this week, “Heartless (feat. Tee Grizzley).” This is the second single off of his upcoming album Grandson. “Heartless” has actually been around for a long time and was supposed to be included on King Von’s 2021 album but was scrapped before the release for unknown reasons. Luckily, it’s finally been released, and it was definitely worth the wait. The track is awesome, it includes a great high pitched keys loop, and some gritty vocals from both rappers. The lyrics discuss the dark side of street life with lines like, “Grew up I was heartless, outside those apartments.” Luckily, despite King Von’s tragic passing in 2020, his estate has been able to release the music he left behind.
“Waiheke Island”- Skream and Propsa
To start off the electronic category for this week’s New Music Monday, Skream and Propsa released their new track “Waiheke Island.” The two musicians met while on tour in New Zealand and started working together between playing shows. The song is named after the New Zealand Island in the Hauraki Gulf and the title suits the track perfectly. The track has a summer vibe with bright keys and a great shuffle beat that is perfect for hitting the dance floor on a summer night. It also includes a few good vocal lines over the mostly instrumental song. Whether you’re into electronic music, or you just want a fun night, you should definitely check out this track.
“At Dawn”- rRoxymore
Another great electronic release is from the French/German artist rRoxymore. She released a great new track this week titled, “At Dawn.” The song has a much chiller vibe then the other tracks on our list. The song has a light 808 beat, some atmospheric synth chords, as well as great lead lines throughout. This song is great to put on while hanging poolside this summer, after a long night out, or on a summer night car ride. It is definitely worth checking out.
“I Can See You”- Taylor Swift
In the pop category for this week’s New Music Monday, I want to talk about Taylor Swift’s new release. Since she is the biggest pop artist in the world right now, I felt that it was important to include her. This week she released the re-recorded version of her 2010 album Speak Now. Taylor has been re-recording her old music for the past couple of years. Although the re-recording process started off simply so Taylor could own her old music, the new versions of her records have been doing great. So far, she has re-released three of her old albums, Fearless, Red and now Speak Now. These re-releases have done incredibly well and allow her fans to re-experience some of their favorite music.
She has also been including “For the Vault” tracks on these records, where she releases songs that almost made the original album but didn’t the first time. On Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), the new track that has been getting the most love is “I Can See You.” The track has significantly more rock influence than the rest of the record. It has a prevalent clean guitar part as well as harder hitting drums than the rest of the songs. Overall, it’s a very solid song and it’s great to see Taylor reclaim her music.
“Think Fast (feat. Weezer)” – Dominic Fike
And lastly to round out this episode of New Music Monday, Dominic Fike released a new record this past friday, Sunburn. The standout track in my opinion is “Think Fast (feat. Weezer).” The song includes an interpolation of Weezer’s 1994 track “Undone (The Sweater Song).” Rivers Cuomo also provides some great backing vocals. Fike has always been very vocal about his 90s rock influences. The song is definitely very nostalgic but also has modern lyrics and an overall great vibe. It’s definitely a great song to add to your summer playlist!
