Anthony Danza has been on a hot streak in recent years. Recently, he released a string of projects, each made with their own impressions. In 2021, I also named his album Straight Talk one of my top 20 releases of the year. Now, in 2022, he’s pulling up feeling like money with the release of his highly anticipated album, New Jack Danza.
The nostalgia is real as he takes on the new jack swing sound that Teddy Riley made famous in the late 80s. One thing Anthony Danza does well throughout his whole discography, and especially on this album, is utilize some of his classic instrumentation while still keeping the overall tone modern. This allows him to tap into that nostalgia but remain relevant enough to succeed in today’s market. On New Jack Danza, in particular, both DJ Manifest and Teflon Ron help him nurture that blend of sultry R&B and jumping hip-hop beats.

Another area where, I feel, Danza truly shines but is often overlooked, is in the overall composition and presentation of his projects. You can tell when an artist feels the music in their soul. Maybe it’s because he produces as well as he raps, but there is an obvious attention to every little detail throughout the album. You can hear it in his delivery and relatable bars, those catchy ass hooks, as well as the placement of every scratch within the beats. Nothing is out of place, and every song element has a purpose.
All in all, the biggest standout tracks for me are “Money on the Way,” “If I Ain’t the Plug,” and “Big Dreams.” That said, the album has no skips from start to finish. You’ll even want to listen to the intermission skit, a voicemail recording which is now becoming a signature feature on every album. Anthony Danza has proved year after year, project after project, that he is a consistent artist who is determined to carve out his own lane with his own unique sound – and it doesn’t look like he’s slowing down anytime soon.
