In the fall of 2019, Myke Bogan released his latest album, Cult Beauty, and I feel like I’ve been wandering around lost in the album ever since. Now as we head into spring 2020, he gives us the deluxe version of Cult Beauty which features four brand new tracks that complement the original release beautifully.
Myke’s sound is gritty like a hangover. Like you just woke up and the afternoon sun is beaming down on your face. There’s something sticky on your arm and you have no fucking idea what it could be. The still-drunk version of yourself is unsure whether the person in your bed is going to be a future regret or a name that you should probably learn. But the bed is cozy and the weed is loud enough to block out the noise of the world, so you turn over and float back into a dream.
From track to track, Bogan flows between dreamy, laid-back vibes and raw, aggressive energy. Songs like, “No Peace,” and, “Quarterdeck,” have that alcohol-soaked kind of energy that makes you want to break things, either the law or furniture, with your friends. Then, at times, Myke is soft. His track “Emerald” which features Portland-based singer Blossom, can bring tears to my eyes when I’m high. Even his song, “Backwoods,” feels kind of romantic, in a way.

Even though his voice is gravelly and often harsh, it comforts me like the softest of blankets. His smooth delivery contrasts with his harsh and raunchy vocabulary, oftentimes spitting bars that make me do a double-take to catch his intricate wordplay. Pair that with the production behind him that seemingly has a warm breeze to it, sending my mind on a vacation to a tropical beach far far away. A place where you can feel the sand between your toes and the Russian cream backwood never ends.
