Although this was not intended to be a big week for popular movie trailers, fans and general audiences that tuned in to watch Super Bowl LVII were presented with great content. Viewers were blessed with movie trailers and commercials of some of the most anticipated films soon to hit the big screen and streaming services. Major franchises like John Wick, Creed, and Indiana Jones all got major shine this week as they work to build excitement for their upcoming releases.
Below is a quick recap of all of the movie trailers that were released from February 12 to February 17th.
February 12-17 Movie Trailers Recap
The Flash
Despite all of the controversy surrounding the film, The Flash will still be released into theaters. Fans of The Scarlet Speedster were finally given a full-length trailer. Previously aired during Super Bowl LVII, The Flash looks to be filled with enough action to satisfy all fans. Teasing the returns of Michael Shannon as General Zod from Man of Steel, Ben Affleck’s Batman from Justice League, as well as Michael Keaton in the original 1980’s cowl- there looks to be a lot of familiar faces. Not only will we see some old friends, but we will be introduced to Sasha Calle as Kara El AKA Superman’s cousin- Supergirl.
Plot synopsis: After preventing the death of his mother using his super speed abilities, Barry Allen must deal with the consequences and seek the help of some allies to turn back time.
The Flash can be seen in theaters on June 16th.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Marvel Studios’ beloved group of intergalactic outcasts return for their third film. After making appearances in Thor: Love and Thunder, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, the Guardians are back with their own film for the first time since 2017. The trailer gave a few glimpses of Marvel’s version of Superman- Adam Warlock. Warlock is to be played by Will Poulter (We’re The Millers). The trailer highlights many of the usual qualities fans can expect from James Gunn’s gang of misfits. Giant special effects, visually impressive landscapes, and on par character comedy are very present in this trailer.
Plot Synopsis: Starlord deals more with his grief after the death of former Guardian and love interest Gamora while the Guardians take on a new threat.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters May 5th.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
One of the biggest surprises from Super Bowl LVII was the trailer release for the fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise. Director James Mangold looks to restore the elements that made Dr. Jones great in the first place. With a trailer full of action sequences, slimy villains, and the iconic whip/hat combination, The Dial of Destiny looks to be an exciting adventure featuring everyone’s favorite archeologist. Not only will the film see the return of Harrison Ford as the titular character, but there are a cast of some new characters joining Indy. Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Mads Mikkelson (Casino Royale), and Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zoro) will be joining the cast.
Surprisingly, not much is known about the plot at this time so you’ll have to stay tuned for more updates.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be in theaters June 30th.
Fast X
One of the greatest missed opportunities in film history is not naming the tenth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise “Fas10 Your Seatbelts.” During Super Bowl LVII, fans were treated to a spot for the newest installment in the cars and explosions series. Fast X brings back the usual gang of suspects to be led once again by Vin Diesel as Dom Torretto. Aquaman star Jason Mamoa will join the cast as the antagonist Dante. Although the spot is only approximately a minute long, there is a lot of action and vehicular intensity in store.
IMDB Plot Synopsis: “Dom and his family are targeted by the vengeful son of drug kingpin Hernan Reyes [Mamoa]”
Fast X will hit theaters on May 19th.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
During the Super Bowl LVII pre-show, Nintendo released a promotion for their upcoming film adaptation to their Super Mario Bros. Movie. Rather than another trailer teasing scenes from the film, Nintendo created an advertisement for a plumbing service. The commercial is a music video for the service using the theme from the original 1989 cartoon series. “The Super Mario Bros Super Show” theme is prominently featured as the plumber brothers fix a sink and groove to the song. The promotional ad ends with a real phone number and website you can visit to contact the Super Mario Brothers plumbing services.
Plot Synopsis: A plumber named Mario travels across the Mushroom Kingdom with his brother Luigi, to save Princess Peach from a rising force of evil.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be in theaters everywhere April 7th.
Creed III
The third film in the Creed trilogy of films and the ninth installment of the Rocky series was given a full-length trailer release this past week, as well as a short spot-on Super Bowl Sunday. Michael B. Jordan will reprise his role as Adonis Creed, as well as helming the film from the director’s chair. This film will mark Jordan’s directorial debut.
Also returning is Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok) as Creed’s fiancé Bianca. The film’s antagonist, Damian Anderson, will be played by Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country). The teaser gave fans a few shots of the fights between Anderson and Creed. The full-length trailer further adds more power to the brief bits that were previously shown. The backstory between Anderson and Creed is brought up, there are a few shots of Jonathan Majors’ terrifying power, and some glimpses at what Donny is willing to do to stop Damian.
Plot synopsis: Adonis Creed is brought face to face with his past in the form of his newly released childhood friend Damian Anderson. Hellbent on claiming everything Adonis has made of himself, Damian looks to bring The Son of Apollo down.
Creed III will be in theaters on March 3rd.
Air
Matt Damon (The Martian), Ben Affleck (Argo), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), and Viola Davis (Fences) star in Air. Featuring Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing,” the trailer for the giant Nike commercial is set to be a comedy/drama about businessmen in the 1980’s looking to make a name for themself, and an up-and-coming athlete named Michael Jordan. The trailer shows Matt Damon spending time trying to convince Ben Affleck to invest in the young talent.
IMDB Plot Synopsis: “Follows the history of shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro, and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of basketball: Michael Jordan.”
Air will be exclusively in theaters on April 5th.
John Wick: Chapter 4
The final trailer for the fourth installment in the John Wick franchise- John Wick; Chapter 4 released on Thursday. Packing in much of what many expect and hope to see in the film, the trailer delivers some balls to the wall action. A recognizable cast of old characters will be met with a few new faces. With the iconic Sopranos theme song “Woke Up This Morning” as the trailer’s featured track, the tone is set. Jonathan Wick woke up this morning and got himself a gun to take on the shadow society that will not let him rest. With heaps of intense action and violence shown in this trailer, John Wick: Chapter 4 looks to deliver more of what the series has accomplished.
IMDB Plot Synopsis: “John Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. Before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.”
John Wick: Chapter 4 will be in theaters March 24th.
