The last few years have seen the creation of a new niche market within the recreational cannabis world, mini pre-rolled joints.
Formerly known as “small-format pre-rolls”, they are winning the hearts and minds of low-volume, casual smokers just looking for a couple of puffs before they go about their day or right before bed.
The rise of mini pre-rolled joints is no mystery though; it’s simply a matter of economics. Over the past five years, two things have happened.
Firstly, the price of wholesale marijuana came down from a high of more than $2,000 per pound in 2015 to lows of around $1,300 per pound in 2018. Prices according to Cannabis Benchmarks, an independent price reporting agency. The market has only recently started to rebound with wholesale cannabis prices hovering around $1,600 per pound.
Secondly, new machines have increased the overall automation for harvesting, grinding, sifting, and packing for pre-roll joints and blunts, which has put downward pressure on manpower costs. These pre-roll machines allow one operator to manufacture thousands of pre-rolls in a shift. Customers are loving the mini pre-rolled joints that are coming to market and it looks like this type of item is here to stay.
Because of how popular mini pre-rolled joints have become, here are four brands who did well in the small-format pre-roll space in 2020.
Popular Mini Pre-Rolled Joints
- Dogwalkers
Utilizing an original small-format pre-roll, Dogwalkers launched in 2016. The company’s founder used to take leisurely strolls with his dog Bailey, which gave him the idea to launch a smaller size of pre-roll that might only last the length of one walk around the block with the dog.
They categorize their strains in a fun “Sit” (Hybrid), “Stay” (Indica), and “Play” (Sativa) format. Papers are refined white with a branded crutch. The packaging is primarily a pleasant forest green. The Mini-Dogs come in a metal tin wrapped in a paper sleeve, while the Big Dog comes in a reusable, child-resistant pre-roll tube.
- SELFiES by Heshies
SELFiES by Heshies launched in Spring 2019 in California. The company’s mission is to present cannabis in a shareable, pocket-friendly format. The packaging is described by the company as “loud and proud” featuring bright colors and an iridescent shine.
The pre-rolls are .25 grams a piece and come in hybrid, sativa, and indica strains. The cones are made of refined white paper with a branded crutch. They come in packs of 12 and utilize a plastic, child-resistant slider box. They also sell two-packs that come in a holographic, resealable pouch.
- Besito Mini Pre-Rolls
Besito is a Los Angeles-based cannabis company with a mission to create premium pre-rolled cannabis products, as well as a space for women and the LGBTQIA+ community in the cannabis industry.
Besito Mini Pre-Rolls are filled with .35 grams of flower and come in the Sour Diesel, Chemdawg, and Sundae Driver strains. They use refined white papers with a white, unbranded cone crutch. They come in packs of 10 in a direct-printed metal tin featuring Besito’s bright blue and burnt-orange branding.
- Jeeter Mini Pre-Rolls (Infused and Non-Infused)
Affectionately known as “Baby Jeeters,” Jeeter produces two mini pre-roll products: infused and non-infused minis. The California-based company is known for several sizes of pre-rolls. The term “jeeter” originated in South Florida, where it was often used as slang when referring to a joint.
The papers are refined white with branded crutches. The infused minis are .5 grams per joint and include a THC-distillate infusion. The non-infused minis are only .35 grams per joint and do not include the infusion. Jeeters have bright, colorful branding and come in clear multipack jars with child-resistant caps that hold 5 mini pre-rolls each.
