Migos have officially let loose their first single of 2021. Following their 2020 release “Need It,” the new booming track “Straightenin” suggests that it could be a single off their long-awaited Culture III. The momentum that the Atlanta trio have been building since 2018 is astounding. They’re arguably the harbingers of the new wave of rap music that’s obsessed with triplet flows and auto-tuned crooning. “Straightenin” is another appropriate banger to add to their flowing repertoire.
In the last year, Migos have been only releasing a few singles here and there to tie fans down before dropping any full-lengths. We’ve gotten “Need It” along with “Give No Fxk” featuring Young Thug and Travis Scott, the hilarious yet bopping “Taco Tuesday,” and “Racks 2 Skinny.” Each have spawned their own viral runs of content, TikToks, Trillers, and memes.
The video begins with the trio outside the supermarket in a cloud of smoke taking off in their Lambos and custom Rolls Royces. In typical triplet flows, Quavo starts it off with braggadocious lines over an ethereal trap beat. Takeoff hops in next elevating the track with more concise delivery. When Offset finally gets on the beat it takes off, swerving and grooving like the exotic cars shown in the video.
With the release of their single “Straightenin” and its cold new visuals, it’s safe to say the Migos are up to something. We may see another handful of singles drop before they start teasing the release of Culture III. “Straightenin” is sure to satisfy fans throughout the summer with the windows down and the bass blasting.
