Another month, more woes in the Motor City. While Detroit’s been in the news for a lot of reasons lately, plenty of local affairs have kept Michigan occupied.
September saw Ann Arbor decriminalize entheogens, October hit like a bit$h, and recreational cannabis has finally hit the state. The great news on that front is that legacy Detroiters will be able to buy land from the city at 25% of the cost. Additionally, applications fees will be cut down to 1%.
In other solid news, Detroit is planning on making more affordable housing in the even trendy Corktown area. This neighborhood is one of the few walkable areas left in the city after suffering from sparse population density and egregious highways. Hopefully it will be able to retain some level of affordability into the future.
Deeply important to me as an advocate for technology access, the Detroit Public Library is offering laptop rentals. While bills and accessibility hamstring many in the city, this is a great step. Many people depend on the library to apply for jobs and work. Having a laptop at home is as large of a leg up as having a car here.
Detroit Dog Rescue is working on getting another location up and running and Michigan tribal casinos are staying open. A couple with 14 sons had their first daughter and a Rochester dude is trying to create something to combat chronic fatigue. Plus another “outdoorsmen” did some dumb shit, killing a deer with a hammer. Then he Snapchatted it. Classy right?
Detroit’s Wild West Vibes Goes From Weeds to Heat
Driving around Detroit, it’s a normal site to now see real life billboards offering rewards for wanted people. This unfortunately makes sense considering our recent prison releases, some resulting in extremely dire situations. One man is reportedly back in jail after raping three women at knifepoint and an 18 year old is being charged for murder and carjacking in two different cases.
A toddler was accidentally hit by her own mother’s gunfire and then in another case, a separate parent, the father in this instance, was found dead. Luckily his 1 year old son was found safe in the car.
A small group of people were also reported to have been involved in a car accident, and then were soon struck and killed by another car while surveying the damage. Similarly and equally as unfortunate, someone hit and killed 2 construction workers near the city of Ann Arbor.
A team of thieves also hit a Project Green Light protected grocery store and stole the goods within eight minutes. It was stated that the police showed up 2 minutes late for the robbery.
Car Culture Is a bit of a Cancer
Motor City is known for motors, but Detroit has some issues with it. A woman was recently shot due to road rage. Two other dudes got shot while sitting in a car. Another guy got carjacked after picking up a hitchhiker.
Some hero ended up driving a man who was left for dead by a woman. Both were shot by another person or people, but, while the woman drove away, she left the injured man on the ground. Luckily someone spotted the body, got him in the car, and into treatment.
But who is really to say how safe our hospitals are considering about 19% of Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital staff tested positive for Covid?
No matter what is happening in the D, Detroit is full of strong people.
Good things are happening, but it’s been a crazy year. Hopefully the cannabis industry can provide some support to the city. Good news is always welcome, and people are trying, but either way, stay safe.
