The Mendocino Purps strain began as a clone-only plant from Mendocino County in NorCal. This decadent strain is pure purple deliciousness. It’s also known as “Mendo Purps,” or even just “The Purps,” to any OGs. This juicy cultivar went on to place in the Top Ten for High Times’ Strain of the Year in 2007. Cannasseurs looking to get a euphoric blast from the past might find that the Mendocino Purps puts them in the perfect reverie.
It’s no surprise that the Mendocino Purps strain was immensely popular back in the earlier 2000s because it’s gorgeous. The nugs are pure purple with plenty of fiery accents from the red-orange pistils that spread out along its surface. Seemingly dipped in trichomes, a crystally coating makes up its visage. Coffee, caramel and earthy spice are aromas you’ll easily pick up on the nose. Breaking a nug open will bring out a more woodsy gas and a tinge of berry-like sweetness.
Some of the allure of the Mendocino Purps strain is the mystery that surrounds it and its parent genetics. All we know is that it came from a North American indica parent and that it has a predominantly coffee-like berry flavor. This gives me some sense of the dominant terpenes that it might have.

Judging from other purple strains and supposed children of the Mendocino Purps strain, my first guess is a strong presence of myrcene. This is a typical terpene for purple strains that can have a berry-like flavor and potentially relaxing and calming effects. My next guess would be beta-caryophyllene. This is because it can bring in spicy and woodsy flavors as well as potential pain relief. Lastly, there could be pinene in there based on its refreshing outdoorsy and piney overtones. This terpene might also bring in further anti-inflammatory effects.
Smoking on some of the Mendocino Purps strain is like a rollercoaster of flavor. You’ll pick up spicy, yet rich berry notes on the initial inhale as it resolves to a musky cedar. The high might hit you like a bag of bricks as your mind heads to cloud 9, and your body enters a buzzing chill. Those with chronic pain, trouble eating, or insomnia might find this strain to be a pleasant treat for any midday or start to your evening.
