Max Frost Discusses New Single “Back In The Summer” And Quarantine Pastimes—Exclusive Interview

In this exclusive interview, musician Max Frost discusses his new acoustic cover of his most recent single “Back in the Summer” and how he stays connected to fans during the epidemic

“Back in the Summer” tells the story of longing for the sweetness of summer. “I’ve been releasing acoustic versions of almost every song I’ve put out since I released ‘Good Morning’ a couple of years ago,” says Frost.

Frost explains that his acoustic covers have the ability to give fans a different look into his music on an emotional level. He also attributes his release of acoustic covers to his influences like Ryan Adams. Furthermore, he explains that “it has a really specific purpose of rereleasing a song and setting it up in the DSPs to where it leads people back to the original version.”

Back In The Summer

He describes the meaning of the song as “thinking back to a short love affair that was maybe during the summer.” Although Frost did not spell out one specific love interest, he explained that most people have the experience of an exciting summer fling. His priority with “Back In The Summer” was capturing that feeling. Frost also explains that in another way, the song is “an ode to missing the experience of summer when you’re a kid when you have a few months of freedom in life before going back to responsibilities.”

In addition, Frost released a music video to the single that was shot along the beach in Australia as he was on tour with Bastille. He explains that he “had some time in Sydney and had some time off so a camera guy from the label came out there and we just shot me walking around and stuff but I didn’t really expect much of it. I thought it would just be something we use for just a teaser clip… but I was really impressed by what they turned around with it.”

Frost recorded the single in his home studio in Los Angeles, where he has been spending much of his time during the quarantine. He tries to go live on Instagram as often as possible to stay in touch with fans. In addition, Frost creates Instagram story series called “The Corona Hour” and the “Dog Roast.”

During the Corona Hour, Frost updates his fans on what he has been up to and his opinion on the state of the epidemic. The Dog Roast, however, is a more interactive way for fans to reach out to Frost. During the Dog Roast Frost tells fans to “send in a photo of their dog or any animal” so he can verbally roast them through direct messages.

When asked about his future, Frost responds, like most of the world, with “I wish I knew.” He predicts that he will not be going on tour in 2020 because of the effect of the epidemic on touring right now. Frost plans on taking full advantage of the quarantine by locking himself in his studio and making as much music as he can.
