When I first learned about Macklemore, I began following his music, but at somewhat of a loss. In case you didn’t know, I’m a web designer and I found it weird that such a popular artist didn’t have a website. It seems like such a normal thing now days that it baffled me that the only “website” he had was a list of places he was performing, and links to each venue to buy tickets. I guess that is all you need when you are utilizing social media well (which Macklemore does). That being said, when he announced he was launching the new Macklemore.com last night, I was interested to see what he was adding in addition to the event schedule.
Now if you know Macklemore, you know he has an interesting style, a great following known as the sharkface gang, and a great DJ/Producer counterpart named Ryan Lewis. I was hoping that the website would feature all those things and more, and I wasn’t disappointed! The website includes a blog section, which will help them engage fans, and obviously increase traffic to the site on a regular basis. They also included a team section, a store section (which isn’t working at the moment), a photos section, a media section, a letters section, and a shows section. Some of this stuff seems redundant, but I can’t complain, I’m excited to see what Macklemore has to offer us in the form of exclusive content on his website. I’m glad that their is more content on the site, the increased insight that the blog and team sections provide help us realize that these two guys aren’t doing this on their own.
Macklemore is the artist that paved the way for people such as Sol, Grynch, and Ray Dalton to come out of the Northwest. Sol recently released his album “Yours Truly” which garnered great attention from the national audience, and was pushed to number one on the iTunes hip-hop charts. It will be interesting to see how they utilize the website and give back to their fans in the form of exclusive content.
You can follow Macklemore on Twitter @Macklemore and on Facebook. You can also, obviously, check out the new Macklemore.com that launched today. What do you think of his new website? Did it live up to the hype, or was it a flop? Let us know in the comments below!
