On June 20, Tyler, the Creator announced to fans that he would no longer be performing at Lollapalooza or Outside Lands this summer. He was set to originally headline both festivals, performing at Lollapalooza on Aug. 1 in Chicago and at Outside Lands on Aug. 10 in San Francisco.
Both festivals have already announced replacements for Tyler. American rapper Megan Thee Stallion will fill in for Tyler at Lollapalooza, meanwhile Sabrina Carpenter is set to take the stage at Outside Lands.
Tyler, The Creator Cancels Headlining Gigs At Lollapalooza And Outside Lands
As of recently, opportunities to watch Tyler perform live are quite limited. The rapper hasn’t toured since 2022, meaning fans really only get the chance to currently see him at festivals or other miscellaneous events. Even on June 19, only one day before cancelling both headlining performances, Tyler joined Kendrick Lamar as a surprise guest on stage in Los Angeles for “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends.” A full summary of Kendrick’s event can be found on Rolling Stone.
Ironically, Tyler, the Creator similarly headlined both Lollapalooza and Outside Lands 2021. While he has tweeted an apology to fans regarding the 2024 cancellations, he has yet to reveal the reason he can no longer commit to both sets. Within one day, the post has gained nearly 3 million views.
Fans React To Tyler’s Replacements
Both Lollapalooza and Outside Lands have also posted on their Instagram accounts to announce their unfortunate news along with their replacement headliners. The comment section of each post, however, expresses a wide range of opinions regarding this news.
On the bright side, it appears that some festival attendees are totally pumped to see Megan and Sabrina’s performances.
However, this is not the case for everyone. Other fans have taken to social media to instead share their disappointment, explaining that the sole purpose they purchased a ticket to either festival was to enjoy Tyler’s set.
Other unhappy fans have also brought up the point that Tyler should have at least been replaced by artists in the same, or similar, genres. While Tyler and Megan both fall into the rap category, Sabrina’s dance-pop discography offers little resemblance to Tyler’s alternative hip-hop style.
Sabrina Announces Upcoming Tour Alongside Headlining Outside Lands Set
Within the same hour of Outside Lands announcing Sabrina as their new headliner, she took to Instagram to also announce her upcoming international tour, The Short n’ Sweet Tour. The presale for her tour begins June 25 at 10 a.m. local.
On tour, the rising popstar will be joined by Amaarae, Griff, and Declan Mckenna.
Sabrina’s two newest singles, “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” have filled spots 2 and 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 as of the week of June 22. In fact, “Espresso” marks the first track to ever earn the singer a top 10 on the list.
“Short n’ Sweet,” Sabrina’s next album, is set to release to the public on August 23, 13 days after her scheduled performance at Outside Lands.
Ultimately, it’s upsetting to see Tyler drop out of both festivals, especially considering that he just made history headlining at Coachella in April. Lollapalooza and Outside Lands are less than two months away, and hopefully fans will be left satisfied by his fill-in performers. Festivals aren’t just a time to chase after your favorite artists, but also a prime opportunity to discover new ones.
