Gabe Garnes aka Localcolor is a thoughtful and diverse artist based out of Los Angeles that’s originally from Columbus, Ohio. Today he’s given us a new two-part groovy masterpiece of confidence and realness by the name of “Block/Need.” With Childish Gambino and Frank Ocean serving as two of Localcolor’s modern solo inspirations, the two-part cut has a contrast somewhat similar to both artists.
The first part is a bouncy, synth-driven bop with coy bar delivery and pretty boy confidence that reminds me of Childish, but the flow is still uniquely his own. Part two is more of a harmony-laden groove with mellow, gliding vocal lines and a spacey beat.
Even as a kid, Gabe was high-key interested in entertainment and the performing arts. He grew up acting and performing in musicals, playing trumpet in jazz band, and taking piano lessons. After his parents exposed him to artists like Tribe Called Quest, Eryka Badu, Slum Village, and Black Eyed Peas it truly instilled a fascination with penning albums and the concept of artistry.
Indie rock groups like Passion Pit and Foster the People also came into play, offering him inspiration. This varying array of interests in eclectic genres and artists have given Localcolor a futuristic sound. He has the ability to weave contrasting genres, simultaneously bringing together new and old sounds.

Gabe came to LA in 2016 to fully pursue music and went on to obtain his degree in Music Production from the Los Angeles Recording School by 2018. Since then, it’s been nothing but grind mode for Gabe and his Localcolor project. Now a studio professional and multi-instrumentalist, he’s steadily building sauce to truly make his mark on the music industry.
After dropping several random cuts on to Soundcloud over the years, Localcolor made its streaming platform debut with an EP named “Modern Nostalgia” in November 2018. Gabe asserts this to be his most professional body of work to date.
“Block/Need” is a teaser for what’s to come from an album he has in the works. The song features soothing vocal lines by Gabe that resolve into enjoyable bars. Both parts of the song have their own chill vibe that will get your head bobbing by the end. Frequent collaborator Ivan Bautista lent additional production to really flesh out the beat. Localcolor has the ability to deliver clever braggadocious lines while still keeping it breezy and light. Listen below and find out what kind of diverse sound Localcolor is building.
