Lithe’s “Fall Back” Is One Of The Dopest Songs of 2024

Trying to define the work of experimental electronic artist like Lithe is no easy feat. Perhaps the best approach is to embrace the unpredictability and let the experience take you where it will.

An incredibly talented rising artist who is well-known in Australia, and who has an impressive 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Lithe is still relatively unheard of.

Lithe’s music is chaotic yet meticulously controlled. It’s akin to a heightened state of tunnel vision where the walls seem to close in, but in the most exhilarating way—like being on a euphoric high with all the time in the world to recover.

Sonically, his sound evokes the tension of a thriller scene where someone’s sprinting barefoot through a forest, heart pounding, yet thoroughly enjoying the adrenaline rush. Does that make sense? Maybe, maybe not—but it hardly matters, because you’re about to experience it firsthand.

The single serves as a powerful introduction, blending frenetic beats with an intense energy that’s impossible to ignore.

Lithe, the alias of Melbourne-based producer Kyle Setch, made his debut on Enhancer Records in 2017 with the concept-driven EP Fervent Gum. This hazy, minimalist record blended elements of club music, as if performed by an imaginary band reminiscent of Australian underground icons My Disco and MAKING. That debut EP aimed to disorient and challenge listeners by using acoustic percussion that pounded and twisted through both structured and freeform rhythms while treating software synths as if they were electric guitars.

Following the debut EP in 2017, 2018 saw Lithe took a step back as Setch focused on other musical projects, resulting in only one release that year—a remix of Deeven’s Bion for the Paris-based netlabel Club Late Music. Despite this limited output, the remix gained significant attention after being played by Aphex Twin during his closing set at Coachella 2019 and receiving further support from artists like Air Max ’97 and Tzusing on NTS.

Lithe ended up reurning with a series of three EPs that released throughout 2020. Each track flows seamlessly into the next, and listening to all three EPs consecutively will unveil a fully realized mini-album. Then recently he realeased a new EP Fall/back selfish game.

He has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including FRVRFRIDAY, Fossa Beats, Pre Kai Ro, and OM1D with each of these collaborations highlighting his versatility and ability to blend seamlessly with different musical styles. Each partnership has contributed to expanding his sound and reaching new audiences.

Lithe isn’t currently on tour, but he has four upcoming shows scheduled for the rest of the year across three different locations in Australia, including Brisbane. These performances will offer fans a rare opportunity to experience his live energy in an intimate setting. Each show is expected to showcase new material, giving audiences a glimpse into his evolving sound.
