Spokane’s Lilac City Dynamics is a cool local group we featured a few months back in our 16 Hip-Hop Artists Making Moves In Spokane piece. Catching our attention with their old school sound and focus on lyricism, LCD is a surprisingly fresh twist on classic hip-hop sound.
The beat for “Hoopfest” is simple, yet affective, reminding me of that Wu-Tang boom bap type beat with modern elements. But, what stands out most about this track is the actual bars these guys are spitting. Reversing the current wave of just making a banger beat and flowing nice. LCD almost seems to write some fire lyrics and then make the beat all while still having a smooth flow and delivery.
One of my favorite bars in this track comes from Illnai when he says “And I know ya’ll really like my songs but this the wrong d*ck to be riding on. Get lost before I really get pissed off. Big dog, big bark with a big walk unconcerned with the big talk.”
That bar has some dope voice work and production done there that just adds a little bit of that stank face factor.
Lilac City Dynamics delivers more than one good bar though. Coming with an onslaught of lyrical energy and vibes, these guys are able to go back and forth repeatedly on one track and make it sound cohesive. On “Hoopfest” alone they switch it up 6 different times with each artist hitting their own nasty flow. Check out their latest slap below.
