YG and Mozzy dropped a fresh album together last week. The 25-minute release includes features from the likes of Ty Dolla $ign, Young M.A, and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie among others. With bumping tracks like “Bompton to Oak Park” and “Drop a Location,” Kommunity Service has a lot of old-school energy with modern-day production value.
“Four hundred chains hang as I gangbang” -YG
The album artwork on Kommunity Service is a tribute to the late DMX, parodying a graphic for Belly, the rapper’s film. A big theme throughout Kommunity Service is a legitimate come-up from the hood, in contrast to posing as a thug. The struggle is the mantra here; YG and Mozzy recall dangers they faced growing up, and they follow it up by calling out heads that didn’t go through what they did.
YG has been a big name for the entire past decade. This album is his first release in a good minute while he has been focusing on 4HUNNID, his street fashion line. Back in 2010, he went straight to the Billboard Top 100 with his debut single “Toot It and Boot It.” Kommunity Service marks his sixth studio full-length, but his first collaborative album ever.
That said, the energy is very persistent because of how Mozzy and YG rap together. Mozzy has been in the game longer than YG, he just didn’t use that name before 2012. Everything started for him in 2004 rapping with his uncle GP The Beast. In 2015, his album Bladadah was met with excellent feedback. Rolling Stone ranked it the 22nd best rap album of the year. This year, Kommunity Service Marks his 34th release since that breach into the mainstream.
As mentioned before, most of the tracks on this album have gangster rap styled beats. That said though, you can hear a very wide range of frequencies in the mix, showing off modern day hip-hop production in an old school form. Crank up the volume on First 48 if you want to see what I mean by this.
If you’re looking to hear more from YG, we recommend his 2018 album STAY DANGEROUS.
Mozzy has a plethora of singles, mixes and collabs to explore. Another good full-length to check out though would be Beyond Bulletproof from 2020.
