The music industry’s favorite weirdo releases another beautifully experimental album that calls out nepotism, Drake, and claiming the title of the rap Derrick Brooks….but worse.
The album opens up with the manically titled track “i scream in the mirror before i interact with anyone”. The track has very punk undertones with JPEGMafia screaming over a beat that sounds like something that would come from a Korn album. The song then switches to a dubstep beat and then combines both elements of metal and dubstep to create an insane track. This kind genre blending style is one of the reasons JPEGMafia has garnered so much attention over the years.
I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
The next track is one of the singles “SIN MIEDO” which is followed by one of the better songs on the album “I’ll Be Right There” which features a sample from Jade called “Don’t Walk Away”. The song has beautiful strings and punchy acoustic drums along with peggy’s head bopping flow, which makes it a must hear on the album.
JPEGMafia has a skill of making songs almost sound unlistenable and then turning it into a good track. An example of this is the song featuring Vince Staples called “New Black History“. The song features an offbeat dissonant synth and a Future sample from 3230 by Vince in the beginning.
The song would not be something Vince would usually rap on, but he does a perfect job. The song also features a Drake diss saying “Private school rappers don’t know what it is / If I show you a Drac’, I ain’t playin’ with kids,”
Bright Spots For I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
The song already mention above “I’ll Be There” is on this list and so is the track “vulgar display of power“. This song feels like the way it is titled. With the repeating chant “I bring the pain” along with the beat sounding like something from an Avenged Sevenfold album. It is a must hear on the album.
The last four songs of the album throw a huge curveball. The whole album is very in your face, experimental, and chaotic but JPEG shows his softer side on the tracks like “either on drugs or off drugs” and “i recovered from this“.
“i recovered from this” reflects on himself and relationships both, romantically and platonically. He states “I can’t do one hour a week, I think I need more help” seemingly referencing therapy, followed by the following line,”I don’t think I need no more fixin’, I’ll just heal myself”.
The 11th track on the album “either on drugs or off drugs” is about if he is on or off drugs he is still the same. JPEG reflects on this idea of who he is and concludes that he is ok with it. This is probably the second best song on I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU due to the beautiful instrumental and JPEG’s delivery.
