After a career year, the Green Bay Packers have now officially locked Jordan Love down as their quarterback of the future.
The deal is for $220 million over four years, with the $55 million annually tying quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence for being the highest in NFL history. The deal includes $160.3 million guaranteed and a record $75 million signing bonus.
In his first season as a full-time starter, Jordan Love accumulated over 4100 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, leading Green Bay to a 9-8 record and a playoff berth. Wild Card Weekend saw Love and the Packers completely steamroll the Dallas Cowboys on the road but fall just short in a close game with the eventual NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers.
Will Jordan Love return the Packers to glory?
Giving Jordan Love this much money after just one full season as the starter could be considered very risky, and with a franchise that had the privilege of having over two straight decades of quarterbacking excellence with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, both of whom won championships and multiple MVP awards, the Cheesehead faithful will look for results swiftly.
Love certainly proved to be more than capable of winning big games, but the sample size is small. With a core of talented young receivers, retaining power back AJ Dillion, bringing in All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs and tackle Andre Dillard, Green Bay is doing a good job of surrounding Love with talent and protection.
Jordan Love will have to play his best to live up to this contract, especially in an NFC North that looks to be more competitive than in recent years, including the Detroit Lions who gave the 49ers a good scare in the NFC Championship game. Obviously, the Packers believe in him, and it will be interesting to see if Jordan Love can rise to the occasion this upcoming season.
